Should wanting to transfer affect my college choice?

I’m a high school senior disappointed by my admissions results.
I’ve been accepted to UCR, UCSB, Fordham, and Bryn Mawr.
I would like to transfer after my freshman year at one of those colleges… does it matter which college I choose when I transfer?
Some tell me it’s harder to transfer out of a UC so I might as well go to a CC then transfer.
I’m looking to transfer to Emory University, and other privates.

we’re pretty much in the same boat. except, i think i applied to too many ivies and not enough safeties … i think that it does matter, it’s the same decision i’m trying to make right now. pick the school that you think you could excel in the most academically. i’m stuck between suny stony brook and suny binghamton (gah) and also considering applying to emory/barnard/ga tech. for me, it’s also a matter of location, going to school at home or in virtually the middle of nowhere. work with your administrators and ask your guidance counselor, too.

Hi thatgirlannax! Good to know I’m not alone! Yeah… I feel like I’m only left with my safeties/low matches at most. I don’t really know much about any of the colleges because I didn’t expect to go them, and my guidance counselor said: “It doesn’t matter.” My counselor is very inexperienced and not very helpful, so I’m not sure if I believe it. So I came to CC! :)

The better the college, the better your chance of being admitted to the school you’re applying to. On a side note, Emory is relatively transfer-friendly in comparison to other top-tier institutions. That said, choose the best possible school for now, keep your GPA high (most important factor), get involved, write good transfer essays and you should be golden.

Thanks ChicagoBears1! I’m guessing my best bet is UCSB, right? I think it is the best ranked out of the four. I’ve already been waitlisted at Emory for this year…hopefully they don’t hold that against me! Good to know they’re somewhat transfer friendly though. Thanks again!

^They would not hold that against you. In fact, it would be to your benefit that you applied again. That exemplifies your determination to go to Emory, and the admissions board would certainly appreciate that.

Regarding the colleges, UCSB is #39 on USNews, which is fairly high. I’d say UCSB would be a great choice for your freshman year.

This is so awesome! Because you’ve been waitlisted you can actually automatically transfer to Emory if you meet their conditional transfer requirements!! You have to stay on the waitlist though!

Hope that helps!

Man, I would kill to go to Bryn mawr. Can’t believe people want to transfer out of it.

ChicagoBears1: Yay. Especially because I was an Early Decision applicant also, so hopefully they’ll understand how much I like them… Hopefully. Thanks again! I’m almost set on UCSB now.

surfwakesnow165: AHHHHH! IS THIS TRUE!? I just clicked on the 2nd website: “Conditional Transfer Admission to Emory is an invite-only program for students who remain interested in Emory at the conclusion of first year waitlist activity” I was never invited… I think. I’m guessing it’s not for EVERYONE on the waitlist? I sure hope I’m invited for it, because I would definitely take up on it! Thanks again!!

PRiNCESSMAHiNA: Ah, I hope you make it there! I don’t know much about BMC so maybe that is why. I’ve only heard good things about it though.

Ah, that’s awesome. I’m seriously considering Emory now, since they seem to be more transfer friendly. I would definitely use the waitlist @ Emory to your advantage, and work your butt off and get that G.P.A. that everyone seems to think is the magic number.

thatgirlannax, good luck to both of us! I wish I could…if only I could be invited for that conditional admission!
