The daughter of one of my neighbors has an awesome career opportunity in Shreveport, LA, but is unfamiliar with the area. Has anyone here ever lived there, or visited on a regular basis? Anything you can share? It would likely be for a minimum of five years. How is transportation in/out of there regarding flights, etc. Climate? Anything would be helpful.

I have a cousin who lives in Shreveport. They like it very much. Ex military, big Air Force base there. I do know that it is expensive to fly in and out of. My relatives always complain about the price.

My S lived in Texas about an hour due west of Shreveport. Hot and humid. Very hot and humid. It was a shock for him, he moved back to the Midwest after a year.

Weather-wise, that’s sort of what I would expect. I hear a lot of people relocated there after Katrina. So you’re saying after your cousin got out of the military they decided to stay there? That says something.

I have friends who live in Tyler and it seems Shreveport is more east Texas-y than Louisiana-ish. Climate sounds like it would be terrible. Dallas was bad enough and there is more humidity in Shreveport.

It was my cousin’s last duty station and they did stay. Her parents even moved to the area. I mentioned that there is a big Air Force base there in that I would think it would be more coming and going of people and there would be more people without family and friendlier. I found that living in a community where there are more transfers and people not from the area made them more eager to meet new friends.

My S flew out of Tyler as it was less expensive.

H and I thought about putting in a transfer request to Shreveport many years ago - glad now that it didn’t work out because the plant closed. However, we liked the town (that was a number of years ago, so not sure what it’s like these days). It was hot & humid, but that is to be expected in that area of the country. We thought the people were friendly, and the cost of living was low.

LSU med school also has a branch in Shreveport that is quite large and a very good school. Shreveport is close to Texas. I think Longview, Texas is very close. I would fly in to Texas and drive. I know that flying there is difficult from Nola, and it’s about a six hour drive. At one time, there was a small airline that flew from NOLA to Shreveport for businessmen. There is a town called Bossier City nearby, that has casinos, so there must be a river up there for them to dock on. I have never had the opportunity to go there, but husband had relatives there and he and his parents have gone, but it’s been at least 20 years. A friend who loves the casinos has gone up there for gambling jaunts and thought it was very nice. Good luck to your friend on a great opportunity!

Yea, I’ve gotten the impression that the gambling industry around Bossier City is pretty big - am guessing it’s one of the largest employers in the area. Good to hear there is a hospital there affiliated with a medical school. But the transportation in and out seems pretty lacking and is confirmed by posts here.

Shreveport/Bossier City is a weekend getaway destination for people in the DFW area. It is about 3-4 hours east of DFW, straight shot on I-20. Barksdale AFB is just east of Bossier City. The city is only a few miles from the Texas/LA border. Gas is a bit cheaper on the LA side.

I have been through a few times and spent the night in a Casino/Hotel there. Much more humid than DFW. Piney woods of East Texas (Tyler/Longview area) is pretty and a bit cooler.
