<p>I know that Stanford has a “Shyness Institute” in which shy students with social anxiety problems etc. can be cure and improve themselves.
On the other hand, I hear that highly selective schools such as Stanford look for students who are leaders andactive, and in Stanford’s case, “mavericks”.
I guess “shy” doesn’t necessarily mean non-maverick or non-leader, but I was just wondering…</p>

<p>So my question is, would it be a plus or minus to answer on the Why Stanford essay that you’re a naturally shy person but under Stanford’s specific environment you have great potential to grow? This is, of course, after showing that you demonstrated significant growth in confidence and leadership in high school.</p>

<p>Anyway about your essay it’s an interesting touch talking about your shyness. There’s a bit of shyness in all of us, and I’d bet that the person reading your essay would have at least something to relate to.</p>
<p>Go for it, but make sure you also get across how you really want to open up. Shyness is an understandable thing to have, but it won’t speak well about you until you shed light on a genuine desire to be outgoing.</p>
