SIBO

DD has been having tummy troubles for the past year or so and recently tested positive for SIBO. The doctor started her on an antibiotic and I’m hoping this will help her.

Have any of you had experience with this? I hadn’t heard of this before so any information or advice for my DD is appreciated!

What antibiotic? Be sure to deluge your daughter with probiotics during and after the course.

She is on Xifaxan and is taking a probiotic as well.

Yes, a physician friend of mine had this condition. Took a long time to diagnose but she had SIBO. She was on Augmentin and saw a huge difference after several days but she was also careful and she added more ingredients to her diet very slowly.

@hmom22, my daughter had a positive result for this, but it was a long journey to get to that diagnosis. Essentially, the docs missed it, and my daughter was left untreated for over a year after being tested. Ironically, she reached out to a RDN (through her awesome blog, think pioneer) in Boston, and the nutritionist was the one that told her she had it. The gastro re-reviewed the results, and my daughter was finally diagnosed with SIBO. Talk about advocating for oneself.

She’s always had stomach issues and actually started her own blog regarding gut-health (okay, some wardrobe capsule stuff? She has also been using the FODMAP diet with fairly consistent/positive results. Her main goal is to prevent a recurrence of SIBO. PM me if you want that info and the RDN blog that helped her.

A snip “Treatment: The treatment for SIBO is a two-week course of Rifaxamin (three doses a day); or a two-week course of Rifaxamin AND Neomycin if there is also a rise in methane gas shown in your breath test. I personally do not have experience with Neomycin as my test did not show the presence of methane. It’s important to note that sometimes a singular two-week course of Rifaxmin isn’t enough to clear SIBO. I personally found this to be true: about two months after my initial treatment, my symptoms returned.”

The good news is that this is starting to get some traction among the medical community rather than the blanket “you need to eat more fiber” comments I get so sick of hearing.

My kid has Crohn’s Disease, but is currently symptom-free and off all meds.

Did a 10-day course of Rifaximin, which did seem to help, but not enough. Ended up on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which only took a few days to put everything into remission. That’s faster than what most people on SCD experience, and I often wonder if that’s due to the rifaximin.

Very encouraging, @prodesse, and thanks for sharing. I’m going to review the Specific Carbohydrate Diet as we have some family members on medication (Asacol) for ulcerative colitis. Good information.
