Significance of the ACT Writing section?

I recently received my ACT+writing score (35 composite, 33 English, 35 M, 35 W, 36 S), which i think was semi-decent . Thing is, i bombed the writing section (8), which lowered my combined english-writing to 30. My composite didn’t change though, which i assume is good. My question is, does the writing section hold any real “weight” to it? As in, will it significantly change my chances of acceptance to places like HYPSM? (yes, i know, you can’t quantify admission chances by ACT alone, but please bear with me, as i’m asking this in terms of ACT alone.)

Also, on a separate note, does the science section really hold any weight? i think that it’s just there to inflate the composite… hopefully not though :D

You’re safe. The combined writing + English section is very little compared to the composite scores/section scores.

The science section does test you on knowledge that will help admissions offices distinguish you from other applicants, which is the point of the entire test. If you are applying to MIT, a science section score of 36 is much better than a 20, obviously. Just because it isn’t trivial questions doesn’t mean that it’s not important.

the combined english/writing doesn’t get figured into your composite score. for most schools, they look at your combined english/writing as the total scaled score more so than the actual essay score. so your 30 would still be considered competitive regardless of the 8 on the essay.
