Signing up for classes? (A-Z)

When you sign up for classes, does Berkeley do it alphabetically? If not, how?

do what? (10char)

There are two phases for signing up for classes via the Telebears system. In Phase 1 you can sign up to 10.5 units. In Phase 2, you fill out the reminder of your schedule. Appointment times are assigned to you by the school. It is based on class standing (which includes AP and transfer units).

sorry for being so unclear. i wanted to know what order people get to sign up for classes. my sister is at berkeley right now, and she claims she was shafted for telebears because of her last name starting with W… is it really just alphabetical, or does class rank play a factor?

I’ve heard that it’s by units.

people would sue the university for discrimination if they use alphabetic order in course selection

It’s a lottery with class standing (e.g., sophmore/junior, senior, not class rank) playing a role.

it is not entirely a lottery. They have a huge algorithm that takes everything into account. Also note that your first semester (Fall 08 for fall admits, Spring 09 for spring admits) you get an extremely early phase 2.

“They have a huge algorithm that takes everything into account.”

For real? I have 5 more units (AP, CC credit included) than my friend, who has identical stats as me: L&S, 2nd year, not part of the DSP, not a spring admit, no registration blocks, and undeclared. Yet, somehow she got her phase I 6 hours before I did. What else does this algorithm take into account?

I was almost sure that it’s completely random for a unit count group. For example, all students with 30-40 units get Monday-Thursday and the specific times are just completely by lottery

There’s got to be more to it than units. My boyfriend, whose last name begins with B, always manages to get the day before I do (my last name begins with K). I’ve got more units than him by a decent degree, too, but we’re both seniors.

I buy the lottery theory. All important things at Berkeley seem to function with some randomness tossed in. :P

thanks for the input guys. my sister seriously considered suing for discrimination, but if this was really the case, thousands of others before her would’ve already sued :P

She seriously considered suing?
You better be being sarcastic.

My D has Phase II during July 25th-July29th.
Is this a late appointment?
She will be a freshman.

Phase II begins July 17th and ends August 17th, so it’s definitely on the early side. Not bad for a freshman! My own is the 18th-21st and I’ll be a super-senior in the fall with over 120 units.

cnat: not being sarcastic. when you are unable to secure any classes, and cannot even declare your major your sophomore year because you were unable to sign up for the classes you had to take, its very frustrating. it brings you to question why UCB is such a great school if they have no considerations for their students… when she went to the counselor to figure out next year, she was scolded for being irresponsible for not signing up for the classes she need… (which wasn’t even her fault)

additionally, due to not being able to declare a major, my sister is trying to take classes at UCB during the summer; HOWEVER, AGAIN, she is unable to get the classes she needs to declare a major.

she is trying to transfer to UCLA next year.

Wait, whoah…how do you sign up for Phase II, cuz I know we get Phase I at CalSo…

I was told about the algorithm by an FPF advisor last semester. He said he didn’t know to much about but that he knew it exists.

^First semester frosh get early phase 2’s to compensate for the late phase 1’s.

Also declaring your sophomore year is not exactly necessary. I’ve been told that it is preferred, at least by some departments, that you declare fall junior year.

it’s the SAME story at UCLA though.

How do we know which classes to sign up for in Phase I?

Like out of Chem4A, Math 1A, and a Humanities such as Middle Eastern Studies or Poli Sci, which is most selective and harder to attain later?

Does less slots=less likely you’ll get it in Phase II?

chem 4a and math 1a are phase 1 priorities
