Signing up for classes, not going to orientation?

So I’m not attending orientation because of financial problems and I’m completely terrified that because of this I won’t be able to sign up for any classes I need especially since my major seems like a pretty large and competitive one. Does anyone have any insight at all regarding this? My major is Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior.

Hi sharont. First, take a deep breath and don’t worry! I know it’s scary and that you would prefer hearing this during orientation, but it’s good that you are taking the initiative for class registration. Out of all the things they teach you, knowing how to use SISweb is the most important. I suggest going through this link in detail: [Registration Guide | Accessing SISWeb](Class Schedule Archive)

NPB is indeed a large and competitive major, mainly because all the pre-med students end up as NPB majors. It also has some of the most interesting classes, but you won’t get into that until you take your upper-division courses during your junior year. Check out your major’s requirements here:
[UC Davis General Catalog | Requirements](http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/UCDWebCatalog/programs/NPB/NPBreqt.html)

I don’t know what AP credit or what you’ve tested out of, but I recommend taking 13-15 units your first quarter here. I highly recommend taking MAT 17A, CHE 2A, and one or two classes that will fulfill a GE requirement. Remember, your freshman year is your time to explore your interests and become accustomed to the campus, so don’t be afraid to take a random class that sounds interesting!

If you’ve decided on MAT 17A, CHE 2A, and one fun class, I also recommend looking into freshman seminars. Sometimes, you feel like a drop among a sea of people, especially if you’re a science major taking a high-demand class like chemistry, so seminars give you an opportunity to build up your confidence in college because each seminar has about 20 people. You also get to know your professor really well:
[Seminars Offered](http://cetl.ucdavis.edu/first-year-seminars/seminars-offered/)

Best of luck to you, and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks DoeADeer, that was really informative! I should have clarified though that I’m concerned about classes filling up. I just checked the class search tool and there are no spots open for MAT 17A or CHE 2A so I’m assuming they’re all filled by people from earlier orientations and considering I’m not going to orientation at all, I’m going to have the last picks so my chances of getting either of those classes, both of which I need are very slim. :/

New spots are opened up per orientation to accommodate all the students. You can register during welcome week in the fall. Don’t worry! You will probably get the classes you need! If not, you can waitlist during pass 2, the second opportunity you get for registration. Depending on demand, which there will be a lot of, they will open more spots. Also, you aren’t just competing with NPB majors, but every other student in the college of bio sci as they all have almost the exact same pre reqs. Not to scare you, but just want you to be informed!

Just a note, if you haven’t dealt with it already but you MIGHT not get math or chemistry and that is ok. Because you need everything as a first year student. What you want is math/chem, but if you know the song, you can’t always get what you want.

Take a deep breath. I’m guessing you’d be worried about graduating in 4 years because of the cost/your financial situation. It’s still possible to graduate in 4 years without taking calculus/chem your first quarter. This is because you’ll be fulfilling General Education classes, which will move you towards graduation. Remember you will register for classes 11 more times. It will be ok.
