Signing up for classes

Since kids sign up for classes at orientation, doesn’t that give the kids going to the August orientation a huge disadvantage because a lot of the classes will already be filled up? Were the kids going to the August orientation just suposed to know to sign up for classes earlier? Was there some kind of notification for that?

Generally, yes - it’s better to sign up early. You then have a better selection of classes and sections. However, the university recognizes the different needs and only opens certain sections of classes at a time. This way they keep the student population on track to graduation in 4 years. However, you may get an 8:00AM class as opposed to a later hour, for example.

If you are in Honors, your registration priority is supposedly equal to that of a graduate student, plus there are some ‘Honors Only’ sections. You then bump kids with a lower priority, in terms of access.

Having said this, diligence pays off - keep checking for the class/section you want, as kids drop and add classes constantly (online). A seat in your desired section may suddenly open up, giving you a shot at that section. It pays to check every day, and many times per day at that.

This process is remarkably better than it was in the old days, when we went to Tully Gym (no air conditioning, in August/September) and physically pulled cards representing a seat in each class. This took hours and required endless waits in long lines. Freshmen were the last in line…and it generally was not a happy occasion for freshmen. Count your blessings. It’s really very easy now.

Almost forgot - Never drop a class without first adding the section you want…otherwise, you could be down a class without a replacement. Remember what I said about kids snapping up an open seat very quickly.

I was reading through pamphlets and I read that kids will not be permitted to register for classes until they complete the orientation program. Do you know if that is still true?

Yes, that’s true. You won’t be able to register until the second day of your Orientation.

also, even if youre in honors the priority registration doesnt kick in until second semester, so for the first youre stuck with everyone else. Its just one semester though…
