signing up for classes

when are we supposed to start signing up for classes? I wish NU would send some stuff telling us freshmen what the required classes are. Or maybe that’s on the website and I just haven’t seen it yet.
What are the general requirements? is there a phys ed requirement?

Haha, no, no gym requirement. And you take care of registration during new student week, the week before classes start. (Generally you register many weeks in advance, but not your first quarter.)

There’s no such thing as required classes for all students…but your program probably has them. ALL programs are on the NU website and should tell you exactly what classes you need to graduate, if you really feel like worrying about that already. There are also distribution requirements for many schools, for things like math, literature, science, etc.

You will learn how to register for classes during New Student Week in September. They will give you a list of general ed requirements (lots of variety) to take based on the enrollment of school. I wouldn’t worry about it now. Enjoy the summer.

You’ve got plenty of time before having to worry about registration.

But, for general info, if you haven’t already looked, check out the new student site:
[Wildcat Welcome: New Student Week , Orientation and Parent Programs, Student Affairs, Northwestern University](<a href=“Student Transition Experiences - Northwestern University”>Student Transition Experiences - Northwestern University)

You can also check out the undergrad catalog for specific requirements for your school:

Make sure when you do register to make good use of Caesar’s course evaluation system. It is about as detailed and all-inclusive as any at any college anywhere. Course difficulty, workload, prof evaluations are continually rated by students and are incredibly useful in making selections.

So, are incoming freshman unable to add courses on Caesar during the summer?

No, you are not able to. You will get access late new student week with a specific time you will be allowed to register, and it will not work before then.

how can we make sure our freshman seminar lecture times don’t conflict with our courses when we haven’t planned our schedule yet?

You can’t register for classes, but i think you might be able to go onto caesar and browse the course catalog and add classes to your shopping cart.

“how can we make sure our freshman seminar lecture times don’t conflict with our courses when we haven’t planned our schedule yet?”

Because you can take whatever classes you want, so you just won’t be able to take anything at the same time as your seminar. As a first quarter freshman, there shouldn’t be a class you HAVE to take, and generally if there is there are multiple time options for it (such as the science classes).

This isn’t high school, kids. There’s nothing you really HAVE to take at any specific time. Besides some crazy double-majorers (most of my friends who were thinking double majors stopped thinking about doubling two months into freshman year) you really are not constrained by what classes you need to take.
