Does anyone have Silver Sneakers coverage on their Medicare plan…and use it for their gym memberships? I’m looking into this…to see if my plan will cover it.
Anything I should know?

Have heard of some folks who have used the benefit and been happy. We don’t qualify–I’m too young and H has Medicare A + B + H’s federal employee insurance as an annuitant. We have no Medicare supplemental plans.
It seems to only be covered under the HMO plans.
@bookworm we have friends here who don’t have HMO plans, and have silver sneakers.
I have it, but I don’t use it. Locally it gives me a free membership at two clubs. One is called “Anytime Fitness” and it gives everyone a magnetic card for entry at any time. After a certain time there is no staff at the site and I’m uncomfortable about being in the gym with some potential bad guy. The other gym is about four miles from me – not a big deal, but my local gym is only about a mile and a half. So I’m sticking with my current gym which is only $9.99 a month.
A friend of mine also has it and uses it at the one that’s a bit far from me. She likes it and is happy.
How can you not be happy with a free gym membership?
I’m just hoping my supplement covers silver sneakers! My gym takes it…agreed…would be nice to have this as a free benefit…
If you’re doing it anyway, free is better than not free. And if you’re not doing it yet, it can be a nice little push in the right direction.
CC parent population is probably too young on average.
@nw2this not in the cafe! Many of us have kids who are long out of college!
There are already several, threads on social security, and Medicare. There are enough of us who are at or near 65!
Lots of people at my gym have it, and there’s a big influx of Silver Sneakers folks for the late morning classes. A nice benefit, if you have it!
Oh so this isn’t just a local thing?! Didn’t know that! When our gym was part of the local YMCA (until recently) they had a silver sneakers program - I thought it was just something someone here made up! They seemed to have good participation. My gym is no longer affiliated with the Y so the silver sneaker program left with it - but our YMCA’s here have it.
My gym just got approved for Silver Sneakers. I’m hoping my supplement covers it. Sounds like there is NO downside!
I use it at our local YMCA. It’s a great benefit.
My HMO use to have Silver Sneakers but have the same program now that they call Silver and Fit.
Hi! I work for UHG and lots of our Medicare plans offer Silver Sneakers. Different regions provide access to different gyms. One of the common misperceptions is that it is just for a certain exercise class at a gym…but it really is a free gym membership for the entire gym. Some of the ones in our area are for YMCA, L.A. Fitness and 24 hr fitness.
I see lots of our members and I gotta say…the ones that use that membership are usually doing really well! I think it is a fantastic benefit.

You can check here to see which gyms in your area offer Silver Sneakers. I plan to sign up in a year when I’m eligible!
I know which gyms…what I’m hoping is that my supplement plan actually pays for this.
My gym apparently has Silver Sneakers Flex…whatever that is.
I really like my gym…but there are a gazillion others within the same distance. If mine doesn’t end up working…but my plan pays it… I will look around for an option that does.
@thumper1 …I’ve not heard of SNF. It looks like it is a group fitness program that is brought into local neighborhoods as opposed to being only fitness classes at the one gym. So it looks like you can be a member at that gym but then you could also attend classes that may be closer to you …say at a local community center?
My understanding is that the places all need to have some silver sneakers trained fitness providers. Otherwise…no coverage. I have not heard at all that other places are covered with payment for membership to one.
Plus, our community center classes are not exactly costly!
I’m only hoping for my gym…where I do my yoga classes as well. The owners are checking.
Another option is just to buy a regular gym membership–Costco has them at reasonable prices for 24 hour fitness.
