Since AP doesn’t count off 1/4 of a point for a wrong answer anymore, does the SAT still counts off 1/4 of a point for a wrong answer?

I’m still having trouble with the distinction between was/were in a sentence using the subjunctive mood. I found this question in my computer science textbook. Is it grammatically correct?

“If a picture was made up of 64 possible colors, how many bits would be needed to store each pixel of the picture?”

Yes.

(word count)

“I don’t want to buy a computer nearing the end of its life.”

This was in your guide, just wondering why “nearing” isn’t being treated as a gerund here since the focus of the sentence seems to be on the fact that the person doesn’t want an old computer…can you clear this up for me? thanks

I used this link to clear that up for me: [Subjunctive Verbs : Grammar Girl :: Quick and Dirty Tips](http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/subjunctive-verbs-was-i-were.aspx).

I’d say the sentence in your quote is fine given that your book is a computer science book and that it’s very possible to have a picture with many colors in that context…

Yes, I have read Mignon Fogarty’s thoughts on this. I disagree with her and contend that “would” signals that we are in the future unreal conditional tense, which requires the subjunctive “were.”

The logical object of the verb “buy” is “computer.” If the sentence were to read as “I don’t want to buy a computer’s nearing the end of its life,” the sentence would imply that I don’t want to buy a nearing, which is illogical.

^makes sense, i was trying to figure out where the emphasis on the sentence was and forgot that the whole point of the gerund is to be the noun, thanks!

My school says they require 1300 (CR + Math). Does it mean I don’t have to try on the writing part at all? Does the writing part will play any role?

What school are you referring to?

Another school:

In those cases the Writing section does appear to be irrelevant. If you are interested in other schools, however, trying on the Writing section is a good idea. I would rather have an inconsequential good score on Writing than a potentially harmful bad one.

I’m not going to totally blow the writing section off. I was just planning to study my ass off for the essay part, since I’m not good at it.
Now, seems like I don’t have to. Thanks bro.

How long would it take my to raise my SAT score overall like 220 points? I want to retake it in November and I’m doing prep with a private tutor soon as well as on my own.

There is so much variation in how long people take to achieve a certain improvement that the average, even if it were known, lacks meaning. I find that having a more open attitude of just trying to understand the test as well as you can and to achieve your potential on it is the most beneficial mentality.

silverturtle: you’ve probably answered this already, but I was just wondering…would you recommend Barrons CR workbook, Barrons 2400 book, or big blue Kaplan book for the SAT CR section?

thanks!

^
BARRON’S isn’t popular in CC.
They prefer bb, D.H, P.R, Grammatix, R.R.

Is Kaplan that bad? b/c i feel like everybody hates it…but i don’t really know why…

Hi silverturtle, can you help me with a couple of questions concerning my future?

I’m a 2013 graduate: so far, in my freshman year, I got 4 B+ total, does that drastically hurt my chances of getting into Stanford?

Also, I went to summer school at a private institution to help my PSAT score; however, I did not improve one bit…

In the critical reading section, sometimes I over-think and think the author is implying something else while it is not… I couldn’t improve my critical reading much over the 8-week session. I haven’t tried out the Blue Book or the other critical reading book you suggested(The direct hits) ; I do plan on trying them though.

I have read through your whole grammar section and I do find it helpful, I`ll try taking a practice test and seeing how I do… sometimes, there are questions concerning style, any tips on this?
Furthermore, I get a solid B for many essays I write.. my teacher tells me to elaborate more, and I do, but I`m not sure how I can get a better grade; after all, she is a rather harsh grader. Any tips? Does using "big" vocabulary help achieving a better grade?

Lastly, what classes would you recommend me taking? Preferably so Ivy League colleges think it’s impressive? I`m currently taking AP World History, English Honours II, Spanish II, Chemistry Prep, and Algebra II Honours. There’s always room for improvement, but I’m not sure which I should take next year and some AP classes I could possibly study at home.

Thanks in advance!
