I am not clear in what way you would want a school to be similar. Can you explain what you want in a university?
UVM is good at exercise science and is also good at biology. Of course, in terms of weather it is very different from UVA or Duke. It is a good school in a very attractive small city.
@DadTwoGirls I want a school that will challenge me academically but will also allow for an enjoyable experience, including a social scene (not completely dominated by Greek Life), club sports, and activities besides parties. Also, I would rather a school that offers smaller classes (less than 50-70 students) even for general education courses. Also, I am leaning more towards schools that have a lower presence of varsity athletes. Thank you!
Check out Rice University. It has a program in kinesiology and is very strong overall in biosci. The school also has a lively social scene that is built around the residential college system rather than around fraternities and sororities.
In terms of difficulty of admissions, Rice would be fairly comparable to Duke and Wash U. In terms of overall vibe, it is arguably a bit more relaxed than those two (especially Duke, which tends to have a competitive, pre-professional atmosphere).
@NJWrestlingmom I like JMU. It’s a beautiful campus & the student life appeals to me; however, I am worried about the class size, as they have a large undergraduate population. Do you know what the general education class size is like? Also, do you have any knowledge regarding the honors college? Thank you for your suggestion!
@uniresearch3 I don’t have a lot of info about it; we’re hoping to get there in late August for my D21. My son’s friend is studying kinesiology there and loves it. From what I understand, early on classes can be larger, but they get smaller as you move on (as with most schools). By larger, I think around 100 or so but I’m not sure on that.
