Similar programs like Johns Hopkins CTY or MSU GATE

Hi CC forum!

My 7th grade kid just took her SAT exam and got 1410 (690 RW + 720 Math).
She had to take it for one of the special classes at Michigan State University GATE program.

Later we came to know about other similar programs elsewhere. For example, Johns Hopkins CTY.

Both offer year round online classes.

So we were wondering is there any other program like these in the US? We did some google search but couldn’t find any.

Is there any parent here who had experiences regarding these kinds of programs with their kids?

Any pointer will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The first one that comes to mind is Northwestern’s Center for Talent Development (CTD). It is very similar to Johns Hopkins CTY, both in the courses that are offered and the way that they are offered. It is a great choice for kid’s the age of your kid who live in the Midwest.

My kid participated in summer courses, the day camps when she was younger, and then the summer sleepover ones on Northwestern’s campus, from the summer between her 6th and 7th grade.

Since your 7th grader got a 1410 on the SAT, in 7th grade, you should also look at the Davidson Young Scholars program. It’s not a summer program like CTY, though.

This is really helpful. Thanks!!!
So we’ve got two more places to apply to. This is great!

Duke still has some pre-college programming thru its school of continuing studies (vestiges of the discontinued TIP.)

We have found NU’s program to be variable in quality (used it only during early grade school years.) My understanding is that staffing is a regular challenge. So make sure to do thorough research before applying to any of these programs.

I would also make sure your D is driving the desire to participate in these types of programs. Note that generally participation in these programs does not help with admissions to the university.

You can look into Stanford online high school, which actually has both middle school (7-8 grades) and high school (9-12). They offer full time, part time , and single course status. They also offer financial aid. My son attended for grades 10-12.

You can also look into Art of Problem Solving for math and CS courses, as well as science Olympiad prep.

We have personal experience with both. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

My D25 did a summer course through Duke TIP several years ago, then PTY (Programs for Talented Youth) through Vanderbilt the following year and a program(s) through JHU’s CTY program. She also did an AP Bio course this past year through CTY. I cannot say “enjoy” would be the word she would use for any of these (online during the summer), but she did get something meaningful from each of them and I cannot say she found one better than the others.

Yea she is doing AoPS since her 6th grade. They are quite good.

I’m glad she likes them!

She might enjoy Stanford OHS then — either as an enrichment course or full time. They place by ability, not grade level, and have many university level courses. They also have philosophy courses that are a favorite of most of the students.
