Hi guys, any replies are greatly appreciated! You can answer all of them of some of them. Thanks again!

1.) Can somebody explain the overlap rule?

2.) If we waive SHIP, do we get the whole amount in a form of a check? Or it goes directly to tuition costs?

3.) Will a Poli Sci major make it in med school? Like will i get adequate exposure to science? (Currently major is Biochem/Cell Bio but gonna change it)

4.) Do actually going to the professors office hours be beneficial to you and to your grade (like “extra points” added to your test score if the prof likes you)?

5.) Is the Work Study program like in the week or in the weekend?

6.) Any tips for the incoming freshmen that you wanted to know when you were a freshmen?

Thanks for your time! :)

Heh, I’ve never seen it abbreviated “Qtns” before.

What overlap rule?

They charge you for it and immediately apply a corresponding deduction. It shows up on your bill, but the two cancel each other out.

If you make the effort to get involved in the necessary science, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make it. I met a guy this year who graduated college as an International Relations major and still made it to one of the top med schools in the country (mine!); he just left for his pediatrics residency in Ann Arbor.

Uh, I would go to office hours primarily for the idea of getting help. Along the way, you might befriend the professor and this might manifest itself in the form of some extra perks. But they’re really busy people and if they sense any sort of brownnosing at the start, I guarantee they won’t appreciate you wasting your time. And from the perspective of your fellow students: grade-grubbers SUCK.

No idea.

Freshman year is a time to make mistakes and learn from them. Have fun!

1) I think its the overlap rule for GEs and majors. 3 classes can overlap between the two, but I am not sure if that is college specific.

5) The work study program is ultimately where the money in your paycheck comes from. It doesn’t really determine what your job, or what your work schedule will be. So, you will need to find a job on your own, and you can find jobs for the weekend, weekdays or both. Finding a job on campus with work study is pretty easy though, since most employers prefer work study applicants over others.

The overlap rule basically means that you cannot more than a certain amount of major classes to also fulfill your GE requirements.

In Muir, for example, you can have 3 classes overlap between your major and GE. The college requires a 3-quarter sequence in math/natural sciences and a 3-quarter sequence is the social sciences (a total of 6 classes).

For an Econ major in Muir, this means that he/she can fulfill the Math/Natural Science GE by using the 3-course math sequence the econ major requires. However, he/she cannot also fulfill the Social Science GE by using the Econ courses required by the Econ major. They would have to take another sequence in the social sciences, like Anthropology or Political Science, to fulfill the GE.

During your first year, you’ll probably be in large lectures and TAs will grade your work in that scenario. So, going to the professor’s office hours probably wouldn’t help much with grades. That being said, go to office hours (that of the TA and/or professor) if you need help understanding the material or if you really have a genuine interest in it and want to find out more. Going to office hours purely for trying to get a better grade is tacky.

Just something to consider, be attentive to where your classes are when you’re planning your schedule. Try to avoid having class at one end of campus with another class immediately after it on the other side of campus. It’s stressful trying to get there int he 10 minutes between consecutive classes.

Thanks for all your guys responses! I am really thankful! =D
