Hey guys,
I have a question about Division I athletic scholarships.
I will be attending probably an ivy league school in the upcoming year as a freshman. I am not applying for any financial aid/ scholarship.
I live in a foreign country and play soccer here. But it is impossible for me to be recruited as a student-athlete right now as I do not have a good athlete portfolio.
Is it possible to play in Ivy League D1 sports after starting to study in a university as normal student (non-athlete). Can they see me play in the intramural games and be impressed and offer a scholarship in the freshman year?
Thanks
Ivy League schools do NOT give athletic scholarships.
If you need money to attend an Ivy League school, and you qualify for need based aid, I would strongly suggest you apply for it. NOW.
As far as playing…at other schools…some teams have “walk on” players… but they do not receive scholarships…and have to go through a rigorous try out process. The coaches of D 1 schools usually don’t recruits by watching intramural sports.
What aren’t you applying for financial aid NOW? Do you have the financial resources to be a full pay student in college here?
Ivy league schools have very low acceptance rates, especially for international students. They’re reaches for everyone, so I wouldn’t assume you’re going to be accepted. Where else have you applied? It’s important to have academic safeties on your list.
It is possible to be a walk-on in later years. This usually comes after a try out, not because a coach hears there is this amazing player on an intramural or even club team. That stuff happens in movies, but in real life coaches are looking at sophomores and juniors in high school to fill their rosters, not college kids playing for fun. The Ivies do not have scholarships, and at other D1 schools a scholarships are sliced pretty thin among soccer players.
Honestly, if your soccer skills aren’t good enough to be recruited now, they aren’t going to get to the necessary level by playing intramurals. Has it ever happened that someone walked on a team and got a scholarship? Sure. Is it common? No.
No athletic scholarships from Ivy League schools.
Very doubtful that coaches would see intramurals anyway.
