So my school gives a 5 for an A in an Honors class and a 6 for an A in a AP/IB Class. 4 for an A in a nonhonors/non AP/IB class. This system is a 6 point or a 5 point scale? I am under the impression that this system is a 6 point scale, but someone was trying to tell me this is the same as a 5 point scale.

The reason it matters is I am a 4.8125 weighted in our scale, and am not sure what the scale exactly is to put down for the common app. And well, simple math tells you that 4.8125/5, is a huge difference from 4.8125/6.

My Unweighted is a 3.7 GPA (And that is for sure out of 4).

Also what are some good selective schools I could possibly apply to? Atm my list isnt too risky I think. I would like some suggestions (Engineering Schools).

15th out of 501 Seniors, I am Hispanic (Kaqchikel Guatemalan), first person in family to go to college in America, 1470 SAT Math and Reading Score, 2080 Total SAT Score.

(Math 720, Crit reading 750)

I will research these schools too, but any advice appreciated!

My school actually uses the same system, and I encountered the same problem. What I did was to report my UW GPA (because every app asked for it and said out of 4.0 scale), and then if they had a weighted section write in ***/6.0. Also, many of those forms go to the guidance office for them to fill out or are on your transcript. If you have to self-report, I think you pick the scale.

I don’t think my school actually puts down my weighted GPA, but it shows up in your rank. Besides, the schools will see the classes you took and the grades you got, so the weighted GPA is just a number to sum them up (which is still off because of required standard classes). Oh yeah, and you gotta find schools on your own. It’s best to research exactly what you want, rather than take advice about your future from random strangers on the internet =].

Yea, I have a list of schools I will apply to, and some I already have… I just want to know what you all might think (since it might spark a name or two I havent heard of or havent considered much of).

Huh well thanks for the one response I got on this, anyone else know about the scale question, help is appreciated.

A bump, lets see if anyone knows how to respond to this today.

You’re ranked 15 out of 501 (top 3%), have 2 part SATs over 1400, and are URM. I’d say pretty much apply wherever you want. You should be competitive.

I wouldn’t worry excessively about conversion of a 5 or a 6 point scale. Your numbers are there.

Your SAT writing (610?) is somewhat lower than your other scores – maybe look for schools that do not consider this portion of the SATs. Cornell (great engineering school) comes to mind. There are undoubtedly others.
