I’m sure we all have easy questions about the muances and quirks of this app. So to consolidate things, why don’t we put them all here.
I’ll start off with:
For the language proficiency section, how should we determine our own proficiency in a language we learn at school? Are we unqualified to answer, or what?

I didn’t put down the language I learned at school. The way I thought about it was that if I was unable to carry a full conversation with a native speaker, then I’m not going to put it down. That’s just me though.

I wouldn’t put down that language. Your transcript will show it anyways.

QUESTION: How severe are the issues with Google Chrome? My stupid laptop freezes whenever it runs Safari… I much prefer Chrome… is this really a big deal??

If I remember correctly from my campus visit, UCLA accepts the common application. However, I can’t find them on the search option. Was I wrong? What is the correct procedure to apply?

Thanks

I’m just about to register on the Common App website and it’s asking for my ‘permanent address’. I’m most likely to be moving house in the next two weeks so I’m inclined to put my new address in but is it possible to make changes to the basic information requested at registration after you’ve registered? (just in case I don’t move and have to change my address back)

@uhmareikuh- UCLA doesn’t accept “The Common App”. The UC system shares a “common application”, in that one application is used for all 9 undergraduate institutions. Slight difference in capitals but completely different meaning.

@Sai:
Yes, once you’re in you can go in and edit pretty much anything you previously entered.

Thank you very much Jonnathan!

These have all been answered in other places, but here goes nothing…

My mother’s dead and my father remarried. Do I still put my mother as my mother? I did… And now it’s asking for her phone number, and her address. She’s dead, arghhhh! If my real mother’s listed, I can’t list step-siblings can I? I have only one real brother, but 5 step-siblings who my dad supports… They also have temporary guardianship of another child, too.

Also, I live with my best friend… This is my permanent address, but not my dad’s. It’s okay to put that, right?

Thanks in advance!

Under which pull-down menu option would you put a research internship (for extra curriculars)? I was thinking Career-oriented or science/math but not sure…thank you!

UCLA is not a Common App School (yet)
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Members.aspx

USC is a member.

I thought UMich no longer did rolling admissions? Why is it an option?

My dad earned two bachelor’s degrees and a post-grad certificate from different colleges. How would I put that down? Do I mention the other schools, or do I just put down thw onw that fits in the undergrad education section?

Can I put shadowing as an EC or work experience? if so would it just be under career oriented?

Asdtank: The FAQ for the “Family” section notes that the Common App only allows you to list one undergraduate and one graduate degree, but that if you feel compelled to do so, further information on your parents’ schooling can be attached in the “Additional Information” section.

Is your email address very important on the common app?
What if my email is fishingwithtnt@???.com, should I make a new email with my first and last name instead?

Sophia7X,

You definitely do not need to create an email address that incorporates your name. Just make sure that whatever name you use isn’t offensive or inappropriate. You’d be amazed at what some students submit.

Good luck,
WW

Is there a way to transfer all the data from one app for “x” school to the other schools on my college list? Or do we have to fill out the same data over and over for each individual school?

Satmerk: The “common” part of the Common App is transferred to each school automatically (hence the name). Each supplement, however, has to be filled out individually – you cannot automate transferring information from one supplement to another.
