Since we are all waiting...chances for merit scholarship?

I would say submit them. However, it would be hard to know if they will make it in time OR if they would take them into consideration for merit aid. I believe invitations (selections) to invite have probably already been made for B/K because they are sent out in three batches over the next couple weeks to allow enough time for interview scheduling. My son was in the last batch of students invited and I want to say he went for his interview around the end of February or first of March. I do know the award letter was dated March 25th.

Good luck!!

^Jewels_08 - Students invited to interview for the B/K Scholarship are not just students admitted to Honors upon acceptance. See part of an email I received Feb. 5th from Mr. Massey:

"We do not simply select from the Honors College students that may be identified as Banneker/Key nominees. All of our students who have applied by the priority application deadline will be given best consideration for the merit scholarship opportunities. The students that are selected for Banneker/Key are also extended an invitation to the Honors College.

If you have any additional inquiries, I will be happy to assist you.

Best Wishes,

Undergraduate Admissions"

They may be given the best consideration for the merit scholarship opportunities, but I seriously doubt anyone (and DS does not know anyone in all his B/K encounters) at school that is not an Honors student that is there on either a partial or full B/K.

Also the comment regarding students being selected for the B/K being extended an invitation to the Honors College is confusing to me because upon acceptance you are notified if you are in Honors, THEN from there you are CONSIDERED for possibly being invited to interview for the B/K (and not all Honors are invited). You cannot be extended an invitation to the Honors College AFTER being AWARDED the B/K, to my knowledge or experience from others.

The only thing I can think of that may be interpreted from the email differently is that upon acceptance, they decided who would be extended an invitation for the B/K and notified them of the Honors status upon acceptance because they were going to be considered for the B/K.

DS is an Honors Ambassador and has just been placed on the B/K panel and I double checked my info with him in case I was off. This is his understanding as well.

livin life is there what high school do you go to? im pretty sure you are in frederick county, as am I. I have a feeling I had a interview with the same NCI person as you (vinay vsas)

Urbana…wow, really? Yeah he is my mentor right now

Jewels_08 - Based on your post #22, does UMCP give student an option to pick out a date for interview with B/K, if he/she gets invited or UMCP give out a fixed interview dates for all selected students?? The reason I am asking is because DD has already made a commitment at the end of February. Thanks.

sk8mom,

I pulled out his little packet (which is a beautiful gold embossed small thick folder) to give you accurate information. You do not get a choice of dates. You are sent an invitation enclosed in the packet with a date. It gives you a BK ID # and 4 options to indicate and return in their pre-addressed envelope.

The last batch of interviews last year was March 11th and the options given were:

_____ I will attend the interview date listed above. Then it asks for a total of attending (to include parents)

_____ I am not able to attend an interview on my assigned date. Please contact me to schedule for an alternate date. (Note: Availabiltiy of alternate dates is limited.)

_____ I cannot attend an interview on campus, but would still like to be considered for scholarshiops. I cannot attend because:______________________________________

_____ I do not wish to be considered further for full or partial scholarships.

DS’s RSVP date was by February 23rd and he was in the last batch of students invited. The interview time will be available 24 hours before your visit at a website to log onto using the provided BK ID#.

Interviews take place from 1:00 to 5:00 in Anne Arundel Hall and are scheduled at 20 minute intervals. There are other activities taking place throughout the day.

The packet comes with accomodation recommendations, directions, schedule of events, and for us a travel voucher for up to $500.00 to attend. It reimbursed us for airfare, and shuttle expense to and from the interview.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

^123birdsandbees,

Since I pulled out the B/K invite for sk8mom I re-read the letter enclosed by Dr. Donna B. Hamilton, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean for Undergraduate Studies and the third paragraph of the letter reads:

“During your visit you and your parents will enjoy a luncheon in your honor and have the opportunity to talk with current Honors students, the Honors staff, and me. You will be invited to tour the campus and Honors residence halls. All students attending theis event will be awarded either full or partial Banneker/Key Scholarships. Please see the enclosed materials for details about confirming your visit.”

This paragraph would confirm that B/K invitations are given to selected and identified Honors students.

The first paragraph said DS was identified as “one of the top two percent of all applicants.” Last year there were over 27,000.

If the RSVP date was Feb. 23 last year, when did you receive the invite? Shouldn’t they be sent out soon?

I assume they would be on a similar schedule this year.

I remember we had less than a week for the interview date and we did not send in the RSVP (that’s how I was able to quote it above) because it would not have made it in time. I called and spoke to the B/K director and e-mailed our RSVP, then called back a few days later to confirm all was in place.

I would imagine they would be on a similar timeline, but I would call admissions and ask. I did. They told me when the first batch went out and I believe a batch went out each week for three weeks. For us, the interview date was March 11th and the award letter was dated March 25th, so literally two weeks later all letters went out with award amounts.

I cannot remember how many were actually invited from Honors, but it was a huge number. Something like 400.

Someone asked me on a PM if the award amount mattered if they were from MD. DS has met a few people from MD that received the full award, but most he has met from MD that are on B/K received the partial.

Jewels_08 - Thank you very much for your helpful information. I will wait and see if DD gets invited or not. If she does, I am hoping that it does not fall within the period of 2/25 - 2/27. Based on your son’s package, I hope UMCP would let selected student to pick an alternate interview date for this year. Thanks again.

To OP–Last year my daughter received a President’s scholarship ($8K/year) with slightly higher unweighted grades and scores plus National Merit, but not as many AP classes.

haha yea I knew it. it was lame I didnt get into nci. I only had 1 interview surprisingly. all these lower credentials kids from my school got it. my one friend who is in nci had 8 interviews but only got umd spring semester.
