UMD is known to be stingy with merit aid, but with your scores, you have a really good chance for some merit aid (1/3 maybe?).

Also, I did not know a Frederick Co. school would have an MSA (not that many Muslims or Muslim-related ethnic groups). Are you and your MSA going to MIST @ the Stamp Union this April?

If you don’t get merit aid, no one is.

@armaryland17: i actually think there are a couple schools in Frederick that have MSAs. I think we were planning on going, but I dont think our plans are going to pull through

@capthammer: thanks

How about getting into honors?

When do they announce merit aid?

I believe early march

Well, your stats look pretty good.

@ Living_life:

The deadline is Feb. 7. You can still go by yourself. Do what I do: marshal people and tell them to go… and hope they listen.

Merit aid is quite a hit & miss thing; a lot of super-students don’t get full or even half merit aid. I know friends who had 2000’s on their SATs and 3.7-4.0 GPAs, and they still didn’t get scholarships.

I do agree that it is hit or miss.

Some kids with great stats don’t get aid or get really stingy aid, ex. maybe $1,000 for two years (I’m talking 2200+ on SAT, not just 2000)

Some with seemingly not as good stats get better aid, even the full B/K.

I think you have a very high chance of receiving their minimum 2 yr scholarship, but predicting anything else would be a shot in the dark.

The fact that you took Calc BC in SOPHOMORE year, however, is what really tips this application for me. The self study in Econ is interesting. That could be what pushes you over the top into the bigger money.

thanks for your input!
I peronally think I’m not going to get any of the big scholarships, but I did get accepted into the honors college, which was a good surprise :)

living_life,

If you got into Honors, you will be considered for an interview for the Banneker/Key Scholarship, which can range from partial to full which would include, books and food.

Last year there were about 800 accepted to Honors, then from there about 300 were invited to interview for B/K. The interview will determine whether you get the partial or full scholarship, but all interviewing will receive one or the other.

Good luck and check with admissions as to when the invitations will go out. Last year they were sent out in three separate batches with the last one in February. The award letter was dated March 25th to give you an idea on the timeline.

really? because on the honors website, it says that there is no correlation between getting into honors and getting a scholarship. Im not saying your wrong, im just confused

Yes, my son received the full B/K last year and I remember very clearly the process. B/K is only offered to a select number of HONOR STUDENTS after invited to interview. Perhaps the website is referring to other merit scholarships. You can read more on it by going to the UMD link for it:
[Banneker/Key FAQs](http://www.financialaid.umd.edu/scholarships/bannekerfaqs.html)

Banneker/Key Scholarship FAQs

The Banneker/Key is the University of Maryland’s most prestigious scholarship program, and is offered to outstanding incoming freshmen. There are two funding levels: the first funding level covers full tuition and mandatory fees, room and board, and a book allowance for each of the four years; the second award level provides $8,000 towards tuition and a book allowance for in-state students or $12,000 towards tuition and a book allowance for out-of-state students. The “book allowance” funds may be used to defray the cost of books, tuition, fees, room, board, or other educationally related expenses. Scholarship candidates are identified through evaluation of applicants admission materials. The criteria for awarding the Banneker/Key scholarship include(s) academic achievement, results of standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, awards, honors, and the essay. Semifinalists are invited to campus in the spring for an interview before final selections are made. Please note that eligibility for Honors housing and extracurricular activities are additional benefits.

living_life,
note the last line about Honors housing being an additional benefit. You must be accepted to Honors to be considered.

oh, I must have misread somewhere. Thank you very much!!!

When are the deans/presidents scholarships sent?

Yeah, I wouldn’t imagine you’d get any academic-based merit scholarships (which I believe all of the scholarships through UMD for incoming freshman are) if you didn’t at least get accepted into honors. The implicit correlation is that students with high stats get into honors/etc…students with HIGHER stats get merit scholarships…so it wouldn’t really make sense for one to receive a merit scholarship through the school, but not be accepted into honors :P.

B/K are only open to Honors students, but quite a few Scholars kids who also have high GPAs, lots of community service/activism, etc. get the President’s or other department merit aid.

Does anyone know if we can send more information at this point i.e recommendations and updated resume?

What would be the purpose if you’ve already been accepted and to Honors?

To increase chances of getting a scholarship
