I had a real problem watching the video on Fox News recently showing a young Chicago high schooler being beaten to death in a rampage outside of school a few days back. In fact I COULDN’T watch it. The wife did and told me about it. First thoughts, of course, go out to the kid and his friends and family. Second thought is that the perpatrators should never again see the light of day.

But why is the explicit depiction of murder newsworthy? They don’t show beheadings of Westerners when terrorirsts put them on the Internet. They’ve stopped showing the bodies falling from the Trade Center on 9/11 and hitting the ground. But some poor black kid from the South Side of Chicago who gets his brains bashed in is fair game for Fox News, who bought the video from some idiot kid who stood there and taped the attack. I think showing this is at worst insensitive and sensationalistic, and at worst morally reprehensible and racist.

Because Fox news has become “insensitive and sensationalistic” and in most situations, “morally reprehensible”…respond with your remote control as many others have…

How can Chicago’s well known problems with black kids killing black kids be racist?? It is what it is. The numbers are staggering so it IS news.

Of course we have a problem with the murder itself, of course we all condemn those who did it. And black on black crime is an awful problem.

But you miss my point. which is showing this on the web (maybe it was on tv as well. ) I had to ask myself why show it at all, and my gut feeling is that race is inovlved in that. When is the last time you’ve seen the explicit murder televised of anyone else (outside of wars). I cant help thinking that if the victim had been a comely 25 year old white girl that the footage would never have seen the light of day.
