Singing while recovering from mono

Hi,
A friend of mine came down with mono-like symptoms on 4/12, and was diagnosed with mono on the 14th. She is a vocal performance major, and she has a big solo coming up in our choir concert on May 1st. Her doctor told her to refrain from any physical activity for the next month, and she isn’t sure if singing counts as such. As of now (4/22), she still has swollen lymph-nodes and her spleen is still enlarged. What is the general opinion? Will be OK to sing by then? Is it even healthy to do so?

Appreciate any advice!
Thanks!

My advice would be for your friend to see an ENT to properly answer that question. Welcome back, antidiva. How’s WCC? :)

WCC is great!!! Verrrry small, but I’m doing very well here. I’m in the process of switching voice teachers, but otherwise everything else is fantastic. Thank you for remembering me! :)

Boy, I’d be careful of that. I agree she should see an ENT, not only to clear the performance on 5/1, but to ok the amount of practice she feels she’ll need next week.

The issue is physical energy and exertion. The other problem is that the voice may not have the same quality for several months, specifically the voice may sound harder, less energized and cushioned. She may not want to show that voice in a very public arena…people remember. I doubt it will do her physical harm, but it might not be in her best interests to do the performance. IMHO

thanks for all the advice, i’ll be sure to have her call in.
