I heated Dr. Pepper to add to my Theraflu tonight - just can’t drink it straight, but mixed it tastes a lot like Dr. Pepper with lemon (a slumber party drink in my neck of the woods). I did use caffeine free so I can, hopefully, sleep.

Peeps kind of creep me out.

OT, but we’re done with college applications! Still has a couple of scholarship things to do, but the apps are in. I guess I should have added a libation to the drink.

I was wearing GLOVES in San Francisco today. And my black cashmere coat which I bought at Saks in NYC in 1979 and recently had relined…Brrr. Hope all with bugs get better soon.

If you stick toothpicks into two Peeps and arrange them next to each other in a microwave with the toothpicks crossing like swords, and then turn on the microwave for 30 seconds, they have a really cool duel before they blow up like balloons.

mootie–Awesome! Anything involving blowing up food (or food-like substances) in the microwave I must pass on to my geeky sons.

Another use for Bourbon–it makes a fantastically moist apple cake. And the whole house smells like likker. I had the garage door repairman in at the time and he remarked on the fact that I was baking. Don’t know if he also thought I had a still…

We enjoy blowing up peeps at our house too, but I never knew about the toothpicks! Tks. for passing that along mootmom! (Is that included in your cookbook?)

Mommusic, would you mind sharing that apple cake recipe?

It so happens I have the recipe typed up cause I shared it recently. So here it is:

Bourbon Apple Cake

4 c. peeled, cored & quartered Granny Smith apples
1/2 c. Bourbon
1/3 c. water
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. vegetable oil
2 eggs
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cloves or allspice
1/2 c. ground almonds or walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Chop apples coarsely in food processor with steel blade. Do in two batches
and chop using “pulse” so apples will not be over-processed. Mix with
bourbon and water and set aside.

Beat sugar, oil and eggs together with wire whisk.

Mix together the flour, soda, salt, spices, and nuts. Stir into the egg
mixture. Add chopped apples. Stir until well mixed.

Pour into greased Bundt cake pan and bake about 45 min., or until toothpick
inserted in cake comes out clean.

Serve warm or cool with lightly sweetened whipped cream.

January 16th and it’s finally cold, snowy, and wickedly windy in Rochester NY. Now this is how winter is supposed to be! I have to put little boots (and jackets of course) on my dogs to walk them. Takes me a glass of wine just to think about struggling with eight boots…(and do ya’ think ANYBODY would help me???)…Well, I should get those boots and jackets on, grab a flashlight and head to the park.

In my grim mode. Those of you who have time to make apple bourbon cakes should pray to any god you can countence and thank your signs or your stars or your saints or what you will.

:) Alum (feeling astringent are we?) …on a general theme here - soak the apples in Bourbon, drink the Bourbon and take the apples in your lunch ;)…
Come on now, we all love ya!
