Sinner's Alley Happy Hour (Part 1)

doubleplay–mathboys & computer geeks tended to be late bloomers. They worked on their minds first and the bodies came later (if ever.) But they got nice girls in college, as the smart ones realized they were good H material. :)

OK…question. I just saw an Oreos commercial, touting their “new” (has been around awhile now) packaging, with the lift up flap that can be sealed back down. Talked about how you can keep your Oreos nice and fresh. Now, is it just me or is the concept of STALE OREOS simply beyond comprehension? I daresay an Oreo has never had a fighting chance of getting stale in this house (or with this CC’er)…

^^^^ Stale Oreos? Although we have never heard of them in my house for the same reasons as astrophysicmom, I’m sure this is nothing that dunking them in an ice cold glass of milk couldn’t cure.

For some reason, I’m now in the mood to get off the computer for a few minutes and rummage through the kitchen cabinets for a tasty treat. Hope Pima bought milk today…

What is a stale oreo? We have never had even left over oreos, uneaten oreos (OK, Spot only lickes the cream out, but Suzette the Wonderdog will clean up those cookies in no time). Oreos never make it back into the cabinet here.

Now, I am joining Bullet at the altar of prepared snacks which are not good for one.

DH is now on a new and strict diet. There are no snacks in our house. DS will have to get his treats elsewhere, poor boy.

Stale Oreos in our house have been 'hidden" and forgotten for up to 2 days (high humidity) & that only makes them better!!

Speaking of Oreos, one of the secretaries in my building recently brought in a treat called Crack Balls. I don’t know the exact proportions, but it was very finely crushed Oreo crumbs mixed with cream cheese, formed into balls and dipped in melted white chocolate. I don’t like Oreos very much, so I didn’t think I would like it but took one to be polite, and it was amazingly good. Just in case anyone ever DOES have stale Oreos, that might be a good way to salvage them.

Wow. Not to be a wet blanket, but they could only be worse for your arteries if you deep fried them. Crack Balls? Crack would be better for you.

(Of course, if you were to dip them in DARK chocolate, I might be persuaded to change my mind.) :D

Then there are Buckeyes, seen in our part of the country. Sort of peanut butter fudge, dipped in chocolate. Two food groups here…protein, and chocolate.

Yes, I’m really not even much of a white chocolate fan, so I was surprised that I liked the Crack Ball…but I have no illusions about how good it was FOR me.

Buckeyes, now those I like unequivocally! One of my colleagues hails from Ohio, and he makes them for us every now and then.

My family’s all-time obsession with a snack comes from what Pima and the kids call “Puppy Chow”. Basically a bag of melted chocolate mixed with a stick of butter and a cup of peanut butter, the concoction is then poured into a bowl with a box of Chex cereal, mixed together, then covered with half a bag of powdered sugar. Talk about insulin shock! Enough sugar to keep an entire elementary school bouncing off the walls for a half a day. But man, is it addicitive!

Fortunately, it’s almost dinner time so I’m not tempted to go to the grocery store…right now…and get all the ingredients for the choco-peanut butter Chex mix! OK, I am tempted. Boy am I tempted…

Ask nicely, and I can get Pima to post the recipe… :)

She’s the one in the family famous for her desserts (and the reason I usually gain 10 Lbs every holiday season). I’m the guy that makes the huge Italian feast for the family and friends ever year.

Pima here…

Puppy chow is easy and as fast you make it is gone :D

1 stick butter/margarine
1 c. peanut butter (any brand any type)

  1. choc. chips
    3 c. powder sugar
    9 c. chex mix

Melt first 3 ingredients in micro, becareful not to cook to long… try @ 1 min, stir and see if it is melted, then try at 30 sec intervals, do not burn the chocolate

IN a very large bowl, place chex mix, pour choc mixture over it, fold carefully. When the chex are covered start dusting with powder sugar, until all 3 cups are absorbed.

If you have a very large tupperware container you can place the mix and sugar in and shake for about 30 seconds.

This tastes like reeses pieces…lasts about 1 day in my house…DD always requests it for when friends come over.

MY MOST REQUESTED RECIPE…TURTLE PIE

Make a pecan pie

While it is warm…
pour 1/2 jar of caramel syrup over pie (smuckers ice cream type)

Cool completely in fridge

Once the caramel is cool (tacky to touch), heat Smuckers Hot Fudge
5, Pour 1/2 jar over pie, use knife lightly to bring to edges.

Decorate edges with whip cream ( I make home made, not as sweet as commercial).

Refridgerate until serving

Beware this is very rich, so cut the slices thin…trust me, the pie should serve about 10-12

I have made this for @ 12-15 yrs, and never eat it, but everyone requests me to bring that or my chocolate carrot cake

OK.

For the cold and sobering month of February, puppy chow is the official bar snack of Sinner’s Alley. We will serve it in the chicken buckets of yesteryear.

Anyone wanting to contribute Buckeyes and Crack Balls is wildly welcome to do so.

And then knock back some chocolate laden alcohol and have a high old time remembering Valentines past and future.

Aren’t chocolate and alcohol the two food groups at the base of the Alley food pyramid?

Wonder what the ghost of Valentines past looks like? Break out the red foil hearts and start glueing!!!

Since we’re all talking about yummy baked goods - I spent the day baking things for my D’s track team’s bake sale. I baked brownies and 2 s’mores cakes. I had never tried the cakes before since I just got it out of a magazine yesterday. It’s good - just very, very sweet. Probably not something I would make again, unless it is well-liked by everyone else. Oh, and the worst part is that I found out the bake sale is Friday, not Thursday, so now I’ll have to bake more tomorrow. At least tonight, she can bring the stuff I baked today to her rehearsal.

For now, I’d like to relax with a nice glass of red wine - unfortunately, that’s not going to happen as I still have too much driving to do tonight.

HEY! Drinks for EVERYONE! I’m watching the VA/MD bb game on ESPN—just saw CLOSE-UP of D, smiling and clapping!!! She was life-sized on my biggish screen TV!!! And, the best part, she was fully clothed and not being passed around in the crowd, as I’ve seen some co-eds at college football or bball games!!!

Is she MD or VA…hubby is umd

astrophysicsmom-LOL!!!

When Pima and I were dating and she used to come visit me when I went to MD oh-so many years ago, she always threatened that she would kill me if I ever let her get passed up the rows at the football game.
As a lark, my roommate started lifting up ever so slightly at one of the games. I still have hearing loss from her scream. I think dogs 6 mile away howled back in agony, her voice went that high!

She’s a Terp! One of our good friends is also a MD grad—he called almost immediately after she showed up on the screen!
