sluggbugg - You about covered it. From the reorganizing of memories to the reduced need for consolation for us parents of the strangle-able kids. I am always reassured when I find parents here on cc (or IRL) with the boys who make it their business to have us glad to see them go, at least a little bit. I do hope (and expect) to miss him “some day.”

Meanwhile, back in the eye of the storm…

won’t repeat the Katrina musings and updates here, but have posted on the Hurricane Thoughts thread, as well as on the Tulane Forum, where I hope to get some non-rumor-laden info from concerneddad

Jmmom, I saw that Baton Rouge was getting hit hard and of course I was thinking of you and your hubby hunkered down in the hotel there. Hope you’re alright.

I could use one of those “Hurricane” rum drinks they serve down in New Orleans right about now. I just dropped off my daughter for the first day of senior year. Couldn’t help thinking that this is the last “first day” of school for her while she’s living in my house. Sigh.

When I wuz 15 my mudder made me give away all my comics and baseball cards. I wish I still had dem because now dey would be worth lotsa money.

We kept all our S’s Duplos and I recommend dat youse all do da same. Any time someone visits us wit little kids we bring out da Duplos and dey have a great time building stuff with dem and making trains. And if we ever have grandchildren we will have a good use for dem!

As most of you do, we have a tradition of photos on first day. My younger D is a freshman, so senior D drove her. My wife dug up a picture of the two of them in a toy car amusement ride from when they were 2 & 4 y.o. and placed it on the fridge with the appropriate caption that night. We all had a good laugh from it, but it doesn’t seem like that long ago…

dadofsam - my husband has a box of his comic books from the 60s - Spiderman, Fantastic Four, etc, etc. Unfortunately, they are in bad condition. Still readable, though. Every Christmas I get him a Thor or a Silver Surfer for his stocking.

I do have my son’s old Brio/Thomas the Tank Engine train sets safely stored away. So much money was invested in these trains and track that it will constitute part of son’s inheritance.

As to pictures of first day of school, my father always took home movies. He even took a movie of me backing out the driveway to go to college. It annoyed me so much that I didn’t do it with my kids (plus they were excruciatingly boring and my brother and I were forced to watch them over and over and over).

Who else has 200+ beanie babies including the eenie meenie beanies from Happy Meals? I have two complete sets (with tags) due to a loving-- and maniacal-- grandmother (my mother.)

I think I will borrow fireflyscout’s idea and put them into the will.

Think about all of the time we spent on line and the money we spent on limited edition beanie babies. They were suppose to go up in value and be worth all of this money right about now. Do you think that if i sent them my Princess along with my The End beanies, that they would credit my kid’s tuition?

Curmie,

Can I use my beanie babies to make a down payment on my bar tab??

omg
we painted Ds room and cleaned out all the beanies that have been under her bed since I bought her one a week to bribe her to try to adjust to her new school when she was in third grade.
We may keep a couple- like the spot that was her first one- but I am either donating them to a kids hospital or a daycare.

I’ll trade in Valentino and Peace for a chocolate martini! My s who is freshman in hs saved his hundreds of beanies and now my 6 and 7 year old grandkids are FIGHTING over them! They literally had a big argument over who got the squirrel and who got the lion!

Yikes, beanie babies. Our DD has plastic crates of the things. She won’t part with them. She’s convinced that if she holds on to the things for a while she can sell them and buy her first house

We are back to work/school after a summer of sloth…yep a really great summer!! DS had his last first day of high school and DD had her first day of high school this week. Got kinda misty eyed.

I just spent way too much time looking up Beanie prices. Unless, you have Mitzy the Mutant Poodle with one eye and a tentacle, or the highly elusive, Babs the Retired Cheerleader, who came with her own bottle of Absolut, most of these little guys are worth between 99¢ and $10. If you’re lucky, and there is more than one bidder on Ebay, some can go for up to $40 (e.g., Garcia the Bear, which I thought must be worth at least $2 Million dollars, by now, is worth around $35).

It’s a pathetic scene over at the Beanie Babies auction site. Reminds me of a microscopic view of dysfunctional sperm. The sensational moment has passed, and only a few stragglers remain, swimming spastically in circles still hoping for the big payoff.

Well, I guess I’m one of them because I’ve decided to keep the Beanies. They can sit on a shelf in my museum next to the action figure of Baghdad Bob. :)

Hey wait, it’s almost last call - I’l just have an Irish Coffee. Beanie Babies… are you all forgetting how we ran to the toy stores for the incoming shipments of Power Rangers. And what was the name of that thing that grew and had to be bathed all the time? Bottom of the toy bin somewhere in the garage.
Can’t part with the Duplos … save them for the GKids!

Welcome to Sinners alley where there’s never a last call. Relax, put your feet up (especially if you can’t stand all of the peatnut shells on the flooor). I’d ask Curmie or doddsdad when did they purchase the plastic hip baskets, because I head that some crazy woman had a set of them on her feet one nigh dancing on the table and singing torch songs :)
