Sit-In in the House of Representatives

One of their colleagues was ALREADY shot! You would have thought some of the gun-lovers would have thought twice when their very own colleague Gabby Giffords was shot and permanently affected. Nope. That still wasn’t enough.

They seem to have blinders on unless it happens in DC. They made more of a ruckus when the mailman landed a gyrocopter on the Capitol lawn last year.

Newtown wasn’t enough. Orlando wasn’t enough. I can’t imagine what “enough” will be.

74 - I don't see the national security risk. As soon as a person tries to fly, he knows he is on the no-fly list. If he's on it without cause, what procedures are in place to get off. I read today that at one point Ted Kennedy was on the no-fly list, which really makes you wonder who the heck is making up this list!

Tatin, but if they don’t try to fly, they won’t know. Their not knowing is pretty important.

@frazzled1 Though there was no vote, and won’t be before November, IMO this issue has turned on a dime. Suddenly the pro-gun people are on the defensive and that hasn’t happened in a very long time. The fact that they went to extraordinary lengths to avoid going on record tells you that they know they’re between a rock and hard place, and have no desire to explain themselves. Also, the optics were just terrible for them, including the ending – sneaking out of town in the middle of the night. I foresee some fiery town hall meetings in the near future.

^They are cowards.

^^ And the whole world saw that.

@TatinG - here’s how you get off the no-fly list if on it erroneously https://www.dhs.gov/dhs-trip

Food science, folks. You may dump a box in a bowl, add water and eggs, bake it…and presto, cake. But the reasons it works are complex and sensitive to all sorts of considerations.

And so goes the workings of government. You may think it’s as simple as adhering to a 200+ year old provision re: the right to bear arms. But it helps to dig into the context, considerations at the time, present day concerns, and more. Our constitution was meant to be adaptable, as needed.

And as we value a base level right to privacy, it’s not as simple as publishing names. “Complex and sensitive to all sorts of considerations.”

That really is not due process. The same agency that puts you on the list is the one who takes your complaint and is the same one that decides. Where’s the independent appeal process? (For American citizens on the list, there should be a more transparent, independent system that that).

Re: the sit-in. At least they passed Zika funding. I wish I knew how the money would be spent. Fighting mosquitos or what?

Thumper, that may be true in our state, but I don’t think it’s true in all states.

Someone else may have more information than I do, however.

ETA: This is fascinating! I just googled “What are acceptable forms of voter ID in Mississippi?” and was taken to this site: http://www.msvoterid.ms.gov/Pages/VoterIDAcceptID.htm

It provides a list of acceptable IDs, all of which are school- or government-issued. The last one, however, is “A Mississippi Voter Identification Card.” When you click on the link, “How Can I Get a Mississippi Voter Identification Card?” you are told what to do: One of the requirements to get a card is that you present one of the forms of ID that were listed first – and which the person who needs a MS Voter ID Card doesn’t have!!

Am I missing something here??

**ETA Again: I stand corrected. I just took a closer look at the MS site. You can bring in a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck as proof of ID. **

It’s all a political game to win votes. Ryan tried to have a vote on Zika funding but those at the sit in stopped it. so now the GOP can say the Dems don’t want to find a cure for Zika. it is the way the game is played.

As for polls, from Gallup. http://www.gallup.com/topic/politics.aspx

Same sex marriage approval is at 49%.

State of US if more Americans carried Concealed Weapons, Safer at 56%

Reuters poll showing Americans agree/disagree with a temporary stop to all Muslims entering the US.

Depends on the day, poll from May 17-Jun 17. Interesting graphic as you can see the daily change.

http://polling.reuters.com/#poll/TM923Y16_4/filters/LIKELY:1/dates/20160517-20160617/type/day

Are we sure we want to use polling as a direction for what Congress should do?

When they’re opposing 90%+ of their constituents, and refuse to say why, then IMO that’s a problem.

But if they believe in the righteousness of their cause, they should have been willing to vote that way.

The Zika bill passed. $1.1 Billion to fight the mosquitos and the disease.

Where are you getting that same sex marriage approval number from?

From your link all I see is this:

“The proportion of same-sex cohabiting couples who are married has increased from 38% to 49% in the year since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.”

Even though people polled think concealed weapons will keep us safer - clear majorities still favor restrictions re buying if on terror watch list and expansion of background checks.

When 85%-90% of American favor something being done then, IMO, Congress needs to listen. There are probably no other issues where Americans overwhelmingly agree besides this issue.

Then that’s a problem with the no-fly list, duh.

I have to laugh at the notion that it would be awful for a good guy mistakenly on the no fly list not to be able to buy a gun that very minute. I mean, if pregnant women have to wait a little bit to get their abortions, why can’t bubba wait a little bit for his shiny new gun?

To me, it’s not about whether the polls support it. It is the arrogance of not realizing that all of the other sophisticated and civilized countries in this world - what I would call “peer countries” if we were using college terminology - simply don’t have this problem of mass shootings because they don’t indulge the backwoods bubba gun culture we do.

^ I won’t even begin to mention the sick irony in that statement.

(Referring to #95)

I don’t really care if it’s ironic or not.

Oh - while we are at it, maybe we should make sure we require all gun buyers to sit through a slide show of the innocent little children of Sandy Hook so they can be made fully aware of the consequences of what they are buying. We need to look out for them and help them realize things, you know.

^^ I don’t think that would deter them one little bit, PG. That’s the cost of freedom, dontcha know.
