Right now, in favor of gun control. The people sitting in are the representatives themselves!! They say they’re sitting in until there is a vote in the House of Reps until they vote on the No fly/No buy bill.
^^I hope that isn’t political. I really am just trying to report on this wild and crazy event.
That is …AWESOME. Sometimes people are just really great. Makes ya all warm and happy and proud.
And they are actually sitting on the floor! Oh no, some of them might not be able to get back up. Time is not on their side.
John Lewis, the civil rights icon, is one of the leaders of the group.
I just wish they were doing it about background checks, rather than this flagrantly unconstitutional nonsense.
Good.
I don’t remember the last time I’ve had anything resembling pride in our Congress. This is the second time in a week I’ve had pride in at least a small fraction of them.
Maybe it is time to join them. Maybe this is the “what would I be willing to do to make a difference instead of paying lip service.” Maybe this is time for a vacation and to go sit in on the Mall in solidarity or at least my state capital building. .
Hmmmm… can you say the beginnings of a national movement?
Hmmm… I think I need a twitter account
I’ve always had a Congressman-crush on John Lewis (no, I’m not a Congressman but he is).
My old rep from Maryland, Donna Edwards, is there too. I love her!
John Lewis’ story is amazing. My H had the thrill of meeting him in the course of his job. This is such an exciting development!
Just because I’ve seen so many people talking about this on social media, here is a link explaining why the C-SPAN cameras went dark:
For some reason I can’t cut and paste from the link but the gist is that C-SPAN’s cameras are controlled by Congress even though they’ve been asking for independent cameras for a long time. When recess was called, the cameras went dark.
I feel like it plays like a real life moment from The West Wing and I love it. Loyal TWW fans will remember when Bartlet took off on foot for the Capital and created a shift in power. John Lewis is a walking (or now sitting) man of history and I respect all he has done through the years.
CSPAN is running video from one of the representatives’ cell phones. CSPAN is showing this video instead of their normal cameras.
Saw my representative there, Lois Capps, Santa Barbara.
My rep ran in large part on “gun rights.” Wouldn’t see him there if his life depended on it
Very proud of my reps!
Happily, my rep is Jim Himes, who walked out during the moment of silence after Orlando last week.
flagrantly unconstitutional?
Go read the Heller decision. Even Justice Scalia acknowledged the constitutionality of certain restrictions. And note the Supreme Court’s recent rejection of a challenge to Connecticut’s gun laws. Or are you suggesting that the no-fly lists are unconstitutional themselves?
My Congresswoman (Tsongas) is there. Plus, I read that both of my state’s US Senators (Warren and Markey) have joined the Reps to show support as well.
