Sitting in on a class?

OK, I know that people who are waitlisted on classes by the time school starts often have to sit in on the desired class and hope that they get a spot. However, are you allowed to sit in on a class even if you are not on the waitlist? And how much are you a part of the class when you sit in? Do you get to take exams and get all the privileges that regular students have? Thanks!

Yeah just tell the TA. I guess they can give you copies of the exam?

no you do not get to take exams. im sure the TAs wouldn’t give copies of exams out either.
if you sit in, basically all you get to do is listen to the lecture.

we’ve had people sit down, receive a copy of the exam, and literally bolt for the doors.

it’s frowned upon, but if you’re determined enough …

most profs will post their exams eventually. it’s doesn’t hurt to ask (and it might be more considerate).

Cool, thanks for the responses guys!

is it possible to sit in on a language class that you arent signed up for?

typically not, because the discussion-based classes are the ones that require a small class size.

is LISP 1D a discussion class? I’m waitlisted for that so does that mean I can’t sit in on that class until I get off the waitlist?

you are actually supposed to sit in on waitlisted classes until you hear that you weren’t enrolled.
