SIUe or UIC

I’m an undergraduate student looking to transfer to either Southern Illinois University Edwardsville or University of Illinois at Chicago. I’m trying to decide so I need opinions.

Academically, not much to choose between them, generally speaking, but that may not be true for your specific program.

Financially, SIUE is $6-8,000 per year less, depending on your program (I assume you’re in-state).

The 4-year grad rate is about the same (abysmal) for both, but I don’t know what it the situation is for transfer students.

UIC is an urban campus, SIUE is a suburban campus.

UIC has a decent 54% 6 year graduation rate. The average college graduation rate is about 55%. It appears SIUE’s graduation rate is 46%. These numbers do not include transfer students. They are not required to report those numbers. All universities have to state their six year graduation rate.
UIC and SIUE are very different types of schools. You can’t really compare them easily.

If you would have questions about SIUE, please feel free to contact a Transfer Admission Counselor who could assist you with developing a curriculum plan. More information can be found at [Prospective Students - Transfer Students - Home](Transfer | SIUE).

Sorry, but a 54% graduation rate is abysmal. It may be average, but the average is abysmal. The 24% four-year graduation rate is just plain awful. Why anyone with better choices available would send one of their kids to either place is beyond me. I realize, of course, that there are people with no better choices available.

I plan on majoring in Electrical Engineering. Both schools were among the top in the Midwest for that program. I need to know which school is just better overall

Neither is better overall. They’re both mediocre. As a previous poster said, they are very different and I don’t know how you’d compare them.

I’m also curious about your assertion that they are top rated for electrical engineering. I know next to nothing about electrical engineering schools, but when I think of top engineering schools in the Midwest, the schools that come to mind are UIUC, Purdue, Mizzou, etc., not UIC or SIUE.

They were listed next to those schools. Maybe not above them, but these schools would be something I can afford. I got my information from careercruising.com, but perhaps it’s not the best source.

If you’re instate, UIUC is going to be within a couple thousand dollars of UIC. If cost is a significant issue, then SIUE may be your best choice. Realistically, if your goal is to be a practicing engineer, it probably does not matter much where you get your degree.

Go to UIC. That school is well respected. Plus, its in Chicago.
