So I’ve gotten into the honors program at both UCI and UCSB and I’m curious as to whether or not Sixth College has one. The benefits of the honors programs at both UCI and UCSB are amazing enough to potentially pull me away from going to UCSD unless I’m in the honors program there. If there is such a program, what minimum unweighted and weighted GPA and ACT score are required to be automatically pulled into Sixth College’s honors program as an incoming freshman? Also, when would we be notified of acceptance into the honors program and what are the perks one receives once they are a member?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t know much about Sixth’s Honors Program, although I’m sure such a program exists. I was admitted to a different college’s program. I didn’t any perks in terms of early registration or special treatment. However I did have the opportunity to meet the several highly esteemed professors/researchers and hear them talk about what they do. It can help you build connections if you know how to make a good impression. Also, the presenters offer pretty good advice. That being said, you could probably achieve the same thing by going to office hours and building relationships with your professors. I say go to Triton Day and get a better feel for the college. Also, feel free to message me if you have any questions. Good luck!

Honors programs are not worth the extra time in a time consuming major unless there are benefits that are hard to turn down. Anyway, here is Sixth’s honors program for freshmen.

Students who have distinguished themselves academically in their high schools are invited to participate in the Freshman Honors Program. The qualifications are outstanding high school grade point averages (3.8) and College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test scores (SAT math: 700 and above, and SAT reading and writing: 700 and above). In the fall quarter, freshmen are invited to enroll in SXTH 20Freshmen Honors Seminar, which is noted on the UC San Diego transcript for zero units. Students who were not originally invited and who completed at least twelve graded units with a 3.7 cumulative GPA, will be invited to join the honors program. Students need to maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA in order to remain in the honors program.

The weekly Freshman Honors seminars include cultural and social events such as lectures, hikes, dinners, plays, music events, and visits to museums are also an important component of the program.

If you weren’t invited, I guess you won’t be in it your freshmen year.

You can be invited into the Sixth College Honors Program after your first quarter at UCSD, provided you took 12 units and got a 3.7 or better, as it says in heartarrow’s post. I didn’t get in when I first applied, but was offered admission after fall quarter. I really don’t see the difference, except that I get emails about their special honors seminars. So far I haven’t had much interest in the topics.

Perks are usually given to Regents Scholars and the like, which include priority registration and advisors. It’s great to get that scholarship, haha.
