SJSU declined me, will UC too?

So I got rejected by SJSU today, I’ll list down my stats so far below. Do you think I have a shot at the UCs at all? The reason SJSU gave me was my GPA was too low (my GPA however improved after applying, but I guess they don’t consider that like UC), I applied for their biology major. Also I live pretty close by (~25 mins drive). Has anyone seen/been in a situation like getting declined by SJSU or similar colleges and got accepted into a UC?

Applied Majors and UCs: Merced (Biological Sciences), Riverside (Biology), Santa Barbara (Aquatic Biology), Santa Cruz (Marine Biology)

GPA at the time of applying: 2.64

GPA after Fall 2014: 2.96

I will be able to bring it to 3.1 or even to 3.2 if I really do well by the the end of Spring 2014, but not sure if that matters.

In terms of prereqs I think I’m qualified since I checked up on Assist. I’ll be missing O.Chem series and one Physics class. The rest…Math, English, Bio, Gen.Chem are all done

YOu have a shot at UCM and UCR, possibly UCSC as well. Most likely not for SB.

Just remember if you don’t get in where you want to be, it’s not the absolute end of the world. Be open to another year at CC where you’ll have time to take the ochem and physics and maybe enough general ed to also complete IGETC (if useful for your major). You could also raise that GPA quite a bit in 2 semesters and you’d be much much more competitive after completing all pre-req’s and raising the GPA. Add is some volunteer work or leadership/club participation and you’re golden. Taking your ochem at CC could be easier than at uni too. Just throwing out a plan B for you.

According to http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-10079.11704.html (linked from http://info.sjsu.edu/static/admission/impaction.html ), the various biological science majors were among the more impacted majors at SJSU, requiring a 2.9 to 3.2 GPA for fall 2015 transfer applicants. Those who did not meet the thresholds for their majors were considered for admission as undeclared; the threshold for local applicants was 3.1, and the threshold for non-local applicants was 3.6. Local transfer applicants had most of their course work from community colleges in Santa Clara and/or Santa Cruz counties.

I think @bear87 has sound advice. If you don’t get in, it’s not the end of the world. Just beef up your stats. You’ll be surprised at how fast the application window comes around again. Good luck for a great outcome in the next two months, though.

Thanks @ucbalumnus‌ that was good to know. My friend got into SJSU for Biological Sciences major last year with 2.7 gpa, guess in a way depends on year/number of applicants.

I’m really not picky with which UC I would like to get into (not with my gpa at least). I’d really love to get out of CC this year at any cost. The fact the SJSU declined me scares me about the results I might expect from UC. Hope I at least get a provisional admit, so I can boost up my gpa knowing I got a seat.

If I get declined everywhere, then yes, I’m planning to the same what you stated.

wow, I’m actually in the same situation as you. I applied to SJSU and was decline for my GPA being too low. I currently have a 2.9 GPA. hopefully will bump up to 3.0 after spring. I’m also a biology major & applied to UCR, UCSC, & UCD and a few CSU’s. I did get accepted to CSUEB for being a local admission. I was stressing out that I wouldn’t get into a UC, so your not alone! hope for the best when March comes along!
