Yes, they are all required to do the unlimited swipes meal plan. I suppose if you don’t live in the dorms, it wouldn’t be required (i.e. if you live at home). Son says the food isn’t great, but then again I rarely hear anyone at any school say how great the dorm food is. He knows a lot of upper class men and women who still have some meal plan even when they live off campus so it can’t be that bad…
Looks like Financial Aid comes out mid-January. Hopefully earlier but I’m assuming not. I’m anxious to compare costs and I do appreciate SJU communicating early since some other schools say we’ll hear in mid-March. ??
Anyone else anxious for tonight’s 6pm update? For us this will either move SJU up, down, or steady on S20’s list. I’ve done the calculators in the past for SJU and the financial aid came out at a reasonable number, but I did it again this week on their updated calculator and the financial aid came back lower despite the same input. I’m hoping they haven’t changed their method of calculation.
Good luck, everyone!
Greetings from Las Vegas! DD got accepted into SJU’s Computer Science program. Presidential Scholarship $24,500/yr + Legacy Scholarship $1,000/yr. Got additional grant money tonight. Still waiting for results of one more important scholarship app to see if SJU is going to be a contender! Mom is saying a little prayer…

How long are decisions taking generally? Seems like our son has been waiting a long time, but perhaps we’re just being a bit impatient! Thanks!
@aidanrockne , are you asking about St. Joseph’s University? (Some abbreviate St. John’s as SJU also).
EA Decisions came out all at once in mid-December. Their website will probably list the RD decision date since St. Joe’s is not Rolling. Good luck!
Oops! Yes, St. Joseph’s.
My HS senior D loves this school. It is her #1 far and away. So, do they meet need here? Her stats are average. I did the NPC but not sure the accuracy. We have another D at Penn State so it’s really going to come down completely to price with SJU. So, when you got your financial aid package, other than merit scholarships, did they meet your NPC estimate?
@Cotton2017 , the NPC was very close for us. My son got his Financial Aid package a few weeks ago and SJU was very straightforward. They don’t meet full need but were more generous than a few other schools in our experience.
Good luck! Feel free to PM me if I can answer anything more specific.
@Cotton2017 , I can confirm with @OceanIsle that the NPC estimate for SJU was pretty close to the actual package we received (I believe within $1K or so). However, St. Joe’s includes in the NPC an estimate of scholarship awards, and my D did receive a Presidential Scholarship. I can’t speak to whether they would have made up the difference with more need-based aid if she didn’t receive the scholarship.
D applied to both SJU and Penn State, and on the actual awards the net payment (total billable cost - tuition, fees, room and board) less total financial aid (all grants, scholarships and federal loans, but not work study) to SJU was $1431 higher than to PSU - to me not substantial enough to exclude SJU solely based on cost. If D was only interested in SJU and PSU, and SJU was her #1 by a long shot, I wouldn’t even think twice with numbers this close. Hopefully your numbers will be similar. Best of luck!
@Yocco2 Congrats on your daughter’s scholarship to St. Joseph’s! Maybe we will see you there for one of their events (or the other possibility). Would be fun to meet IRL.
@1stTimeThruMom Thanks! Let me know if you are going to any of the admitted student events.
Anyone hear about the McNulty Scholarship?
We just put our deposit in. It was by far his number one choice but he was accepted to Pitt and JMU Honors program. He got a very nice package from SJU totaling $28,000. His stats are 1330 SAT 4.0 unweighted, Class President, Varsity athlete, etc. He is very excited and I think he’s making a good choice.
@TimJG Can I ask what your son liked more about SJU than JMU Honors?
Hi all, just thought I’d mention that St. Joe’s has another zoom tonight with the President and Exec team. My husband and I attended one last week and were very impressed. Have any of your kids made final decisions? It looks like L.U. is out of the cost equation for us, so son is deciding now from among Elon and merit offers at Furman and St. Joe’s. Would love any feedback. Sadly we could not visit SJU as initially I was too sick to travel and then we got put under a do not travel order in MD!
