The avalanche was near Truckee, which was where we were (well Truckee is the closest town to the Northstar resort area) which is scary for sure, but we are fine. Not familiar with the particular area where the avalanche occurred, but I really hope those back country skiers are safe. So scary.
We leave for Big Sky, MT in 2 days. Our good friends rented a ski in/ski out for the season and invited us to stay with them. Fortunately Big Sky has started to get some snow (over a foot in the last few days) because just a couple of weeks ago our friends were unsure if we should make the trip. We are only doing a nine day trip instead of the normal 18 day ski trip we usually do in February. We will have 4.5 days of skiing in Big Sky then head to West Yellowstone for a few days. We went into Yellowstone in the winter of 2020 and loved it. We are looking forward to going into the park again when it is so empty. H and I will do the snow coach while D2 is going to go on the snowmobile tour.
A young man who grew up in our neighborhood & went to school with our kids is a backcountry skier. He miraculously survived an avalanche and long fall in that area a few years ago (he lives there now). He is okay now, but initially they weren’t sure if he’d survive, and he was hospitalized for a long time. When I heard the news of the most recent avalanche, all I could think was that I hope he wasn’t in it. Backcountry skiers aren’t easily scared off.
Sounds like a great plan. And since Colorado snow situation is dismal this year, timing is good. Enjoy it all!
Terrible news coming out of Tahoe. They have found 8 of the skiers dead and 1 is still missing. This is just so sad.
Now the worst avalanche in terms of deaths in CA (previous was IIRC 1982 with 7 deaths.
Horrible
And there was an updated report to last night’s Northstar snowfall. More than originally posted on their site!
I remember the 1982 avalanche at Alpine Meadows. My grandparents were still living in Tahoe then.
LOL - did they not read the “Look Uphill” sign?
My kids skied Heavenly and Northstar this week. DC who is living in CA also skis Brighton. I had never heard of Northstar or Brighton until DC moved out there.
I liked my friend’s “little local” resort of Monarch Mtn in CO when I skied it years ago. Pulled right up to the lodge to park. I think there are like 2 buildings. Not a resort and nothing fancy, but good skiing!
Since we have the Indy Pass we routinely go to the smaller, off the beaten track places. They’re very accessible (I guess in terms of the ski world). For anyone in CO now, @Colorado_mom anyone else??, we are planning to ski in CO for spring break March 6-13. We have lower expectations due to the snow season this year but how has it been in these last couple weeks? We’re planning Loveland, Copper (not on Indy), and maybe Granby Ranch. Would love to hear any reports!
LOL - I’m back east for a few weeks on doing a variety of family help/chores. When I left, the conditions were not great. Of course this is the first season ever that I have bought an Ikon pass. Sigh. Hoping for some decent March/April skiing. A girl can dream.
@Colorado_mom yes here’s to hoping!
Article containing interviews with some of the avalanche survivors. So awful.
Meant to share this miracle- skier saved at Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley) a few days after the nearby avalanche:
Copper has good snow making, so always has some. Haven’t heard much about the others, but definitely stay in bounds at Loveland as the avalanche danger is always high when the weather warms up and then refreezes, and it’s been doing that a lot.
Denver had NO snow at all in the month of February. NONE. It did rain here on Tues (3/3) and it is supposed to snow on Friday.
Southern Colorado mountains like Wolf Creek, Purgatory, Telluride have had more snow recently than the I-70 resorts.
If Thursday works for Copper, you may be able to get $99 tickets (but booking ahead required). We have had family situations on east coast, so sadly I have not yet been to Copper (or Winter Park) this year even though it is my first time ever with Ikon pass. Cannot offer any personal info about ski conditions.

@Colorado_mom Yes Copper for Thursday! My husband found that deal & reserved. Thanks for the tip though and snow reports from others! We usually go this same week most years and you just never know. Sometimes great, sometimes ok. It’s still vacation so that’s fine by me! I’ll report back.
