I am currently a first year at Sarah Lawrence and I am planning on transferring out to Skidmore College.
I am having second doubts about this decision because I very much love attending Sarah Lawrence, but I might have
to transfer to a college that offers much better aid. To be 100% honest, I’m not even sure if Skidmore has good financial aid for transfer students (please tell if they do or don’t). I am wondering: Is it better to stay at Sarah Lawrence or transfer to Skidmore? I’m basically looking for everything Sarah Lawrence offers in terms of education, campus politics, prestige, etc. I’m afraid of transferring to a school that might be cheaper with financial aid but more conservative and traditional than the one I go to.

Mind you, I am a gay student and I don’t think I’m that worried about being picked on for being gay. I’m more concerned with how different/harder/easier Skidmore’s curriculum is compared to Sarah Lawrence’s. I’ve also heard that Skidmore is much less tame than Sarah Lawrence and the students there are less off-beat or whatever. But I’m afraid of being feeling ostracized/different there. I pretty much only fit in at a progressive school like Bennington (I can’t afford it) and I think Skidmore might be too normal for me The only reason I’m interested in Skidmore is because it’s close to my current college and that it was considered a New Ivie (Although I might actually hate that, since I don’t really care for the Ivy League schools). I just keep hearing two completely different opinions on Skidmore. People tell me it’s very progressive and liberal in terms of environment and education, but some say it’s more like Union College or Ithaca College in terms of environment and education. Mind you, I do NOT want to go to Union or Ithaca.

Have you tried talking to the FA officers at Sarah Lawrence and explaining your circumstances? It’s worth a shot to stay at a school that you love.

I’ll try talking to the FA officers at Sarah Lawrence but they explained to me that my financial aid WILL increase in the future. I have a lot of friends who left the school because their financial aid dramatically increased and I’m scared this could happen to me (My brother is going to graduate soon, so my FAFSA EFC will double I’m assuming). I looked at websites that compare financial aid among colleges and I found out from those statistics that Skidmore is a lot more helpful in getting the student to afford attending the institution than Sarah Lawrence.
