Skidmore safeties

My child loves everything about Skidmore, especially selection of art classes, and student body, but concerned price tag will be too high. Need financial and academic admission safeties with similar feel. Any suggestions?

Applicantmum, how about Goucher, Allegheny, St. Lawrence and Saint Mary’s in Maryland. St. Marys is not religious affiliated but is named after the town it is in. It is the Maryland public honors college. All are very good schools.

Muhlenberg (academic safety) seems like a good fit based on my moderate understanding of the Skidmore atmosphere…
I second Goucher, I visited and loved it, and my friend who applied to Skidmore also applied to Goucher.
financial safety would depend mainly on your state, which I don’t know… so…

Wheaton (MA), Clark, Ithaca

SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Purchase as financial safeties. Alfred for art courses.

I second Wheaton MA! Highly recommended.
Many of these academic safeties are also likely financial safeties because they offer generous merit aid.

How about Bard?

Bard is more selective than Skidmore and just as expensive. It is need-blind.

Goucher would be a good one.

My high school was a mountain school in upstate New York that sent many to Skidmore. Most often, their safeties were Hartwick College, McDaniel, Sarah Lawrence (for guys, it’s long been considered a safety at my school), Green Mountain, Warren Wilson, Franklin Pierce, and Drew.

I’d also take a good look at Savannah School of Design.

Common schools Skidmore kids would apply (a lot of these are based off of my former roommates, both now at Skidmore): Hamilton, Reed, Oberlin, Bates, Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, Vassar, and Franklin & Marshall,

Are these schools folks applied to but didn’t get into?

mum, Some other ideas for good art, not too selective, Conn College and Smith.

Need to know more about your expectations on finance. Most private LACs are in the same cost range. Will your family qualify for need based aid? If yes, your daughter can widen her list. If, on the the other hand, you’re hoping for merit aid or a lower tuition in general, then many of the suggestions you’ve been given aren’t going to fly.

BalletGirl, we’ve had kids accepted to all of them. The only one we’ve never sent anyone to is Middlebury. Funny thing is, for a school that only sends kids to LACs and art schools, I can account for someone at every Top 20 LAC accept Middlebury.

Thanks to all!!! This website is amazing. Drew, Goucher and Muhlenberg are on the list. My oldest D is at Muhlenberg with merit money. She loves it but my #2 child wants to chart new waters. Goucher is promising but size is small.
We are looking for merit money. Won’t qualify for FA but skidmore is pretty pricey with 2 in college. And both plan on grad school.
Anyone know about St. Mary’s in Maryland in terms of Art history and studio?
Wheaton was crossed off the list because of coed bathrooms!!! Yes we want liberal and artsy, but NOT when it comes to bathrooms! I learned this after driving all the way to Massachusettes.
We will check out Clark. Any thoughts about the neighborhood?
We just found Beloit. Anyone know how it compares to Skidmore?
Thanks again. With CC who needs HS guidance counselors!!!

St. Mary’s MD is amazing, and the campus is gorgeous. I don’t know much about the specific programs, though.

Speaking of pretty campuses, how about UVM? Although a university, it’s fairly similar to Skidmore.

As for Beloit, it does have an artsier feel…but I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily like Skidmore. While Skidmore is known for being liberal and free-thinking, Beloit is more known for being wacky and weird. It’s a good little school, all in all, but the location is horrible (the town is really run-down, and isn’t typically regarded as a great place to live).

I agree that there is the yuck factor associated with coed bathrooms at Wheaton, but there is plenty of single sex housing available as well.

I don’t think SMith could ever be considered a safety for Skidmore. Skidmore has gone up in the years since its second tier days, but not that far!

dke, I agree Smith is stronger accademically than Skidmore, but because it’s all women the acceptance rate is on the high side. Plus, merit aid is good.
