I like narrow straight legged jeans and cords, not the true skinny ones. I’ve discovered that I can figure out which ones to try on by putting my flat hand across the bottom of the leg. If the pants are about the width of my hand from finger tip to wrist fold, then they will likely be right. If wider, they are baggy and if narrower, they are tight around the ankle, not a good look for me. Using my formula, pants can be a bit loose to tuck into boots but if I sort of fold them around my calf and put my socks over them, it works just fine.

I don’t tuck the “skinny pants” into my boot, but a narrow leg works. My ankle capris work. I needed narrow leg cords, though for winter and those I needed “skinny.” My boots don’t cling to my calves so I have room. When the NYDJ came out and everyone raved about them I went to try them on, but they don’t work for me either. My butt is flat, my legs are thin, not skinny but my stomach is NOT what it was before 3 kids and pretty poochie so I thought they’d flatten me out, but they just fit strange. I’m better off with plain jeans and good underwear.

Jones New York. About a month ago I tried on the brand for the first time in my life, and they fit perfectly! I figured it was a sign from above, so I bought them, and I’ve been very happy with them. Prior to that I always wore Levis, which come in many different cuts and styles.

Another NYDJ fan. I don’t think they are too high waisted - unlike all my pants from LL Bean. I recently got some Gloria Vanderbilt cords at Costco and was pleased with the fit.

I think the first question needs to be wear do you like the waist of your pants to fit. It might also be helpful if when you recommend a brand you also add wear the waist fits.
I know many who love NYDJ but they are to high waisted for me.

As for skinny jeans- j crew work for me but they are above your budget. I wear the Gap skinny but they are not my favorite. Both of these are lower waisted but not so low you see my butt.
I like AG and Old Navy for skinny cords. The Old Navy cords are a great price. Both these would not be good if you want a high waisted pant.

I am very high waisted, so NYDJ come below MY waist as do GV jeans. So it’s not only where you like your jeans to be, but also how YOU are built. Those NYDJ are a good two inches below MY waist! Maybe that is why I like them.

I hate higher waisted jeans…not comfortable at all.

I am 56 and wear skinny jeans all the time. You might have to try on multiple brands to find your best fit. If you live near a Nordstrom Rack you can find brands like NYDJ and Lucky for well under $100.

It took me only 60 years to get my first pair! I am thin enough, but I felt that I was just too old. I bought Ralph Lauren Petite Modern Skinny Fit, and I think they look great, although I haven’t worn them yet. I don’t own boots, so it will be flats for me. I have Levis Skinny Straight (from Macys), and I like them too, but they are more straight than skinny. I have short legs, and most of the brands have inseams that are too long. I have a thing about scoring a great buy, and than having to shell out $14 to my local tailor to have them shortened. Levis makes a short length, and RL Petites are perfect. What I really crave is a pair of JCrew Matchsticks. Someday.

Pants are a challenge this season, with all these ankle pants, including jeans, many of which are skinny legged. Growing up when there were no tall pants, and hating that they were all too short, never ever will I be happy with ankle pants. Usually there is a nice selection of tall pants/jeans at Banana Republic, but not this year, all the regular tall length pants are sold out in the middle sizes. I bet there will be a plethora of ankle length pants on sale this year, really cheap, so if you are not tall and like that style, wait it out.

JCrew Matchstick or GAP. Then have them shortened so they fit in boots. Both have enough room in the legs so they are narrow but not tight. (Ebay for lower prices!!)

AG Stevie jeans and the Pelagro brand sold at Anthropologie. I’m 5’7"/130 with longer legs and a shorter torso - both hit me about an inch below the naval. I like both because THEY DON’T STRETCH OUT. I’ve tried many of the other brands mentioned - NYDJ and J Crew, especially, and after one wearing they sag in the butt and look sloppy. A good pair of jeans is worth the money, IMO.

Tried NYDJ and gave them to my sister. JAG works for me regular and pull on. I bought several pull on slims at Nordstrom anniv sale. Love the fit in my boots. They would fit better if I had hips or tummy but they don’t sag. I wear them all day on weekends, almost as comfortable as sweats, as comfortable as leggings.

Yes, a good pair of jeans is worth the money (as well as the aggravation of searching for that perfect pair). Before losing a few pounds, NYDJ was a safe bet for me, but nowadays even their smallest size falls off me. After trying on many different styles and brands, I settled on Burberry, Vince, and Paige Denim as my new go to jean brands, as well as some Gap styles (but I had to size down all the way to size 25 in Gap denim to make them work for me!)

bb,
The White House/Black House jeans and velvet jeans were sized to OOS. I know it is flatering to wear a small size, but it is about a store’s marketing. My jeans from BR are more realistic, at 25 or 26. I do not look good in any kind of cropped jean, which is what I keep seeing.

I still love my Custo Barcelona’s, which have silk thru waistband and fit and wear perfectly.

Tall folks…try Coldwater Creek. Someone gave me two pairs of LONG sized Coldwater Creek cord jeans. I have a 32 inch inseam (and I’m only 5’4" tall). These pants are at least four inches too long on me.

That’s the nice thing about shopping at Nordstroms. They do alterations for free; they’ll even send them out to you in the mail, at no charge, if you don’t want to go back to the store to pick them up.

Thank you, bookworm. I find those marketing tricks really aggravating. I am not a skinny person by any measurements - my actual waist circumference is 27 inches. It is really annoying to have to haul 3 pairs of jeans of each style into the dressing room and hope that one of the 3 sizes fits. Can’t even think what truly skinny people have to deal with.

Headed off to a party.I have my AG Stevie skinny cords on now tucked into a pair of short boots. I am over 50 and I think it looks age appropriate. The waist hits about 2 inches below my belly button.
They are super soft and almost feel like velvet. They are long though. If they weren’t so expensive I would get another pair in the ankle length. I haven’t tried the style in denim but I might in the spring.
BunsenBurner- That is one thing I hate about jean shopping. I also find depending on the wash the sizing fits differently. Or the company changes the source of their denim and they feel totally different

I have some from Chicos, and I was out to breakfast today with a friend and she said she had the same ones and tried to get more, but they were gone. They have several different styles. I’ve decided lately that even heavier women look better in jeans that are “skinnier.”

Spanx is your friend. It will mitigate the muffin top.
