I heard that if you’re pre-med, you can take this course another year. Is this true, and does this also apply to University Writing?

nobody skips UW. formerly called “Logic and Rhetoric”, it’s one of those courses that define the undergrad education at Columbia, and one that the administration wants to make sure you’ve taken. Don’t worry, it’s a very small intimate class setting and can be fun.

i think you can place out of Frontiers by doing a tech major, but I went to SEAS so my information is secondhand.

i don’t think you can skip FoS…otherwise i’m sure there would be a lot of chem/phys/bio majors taking another one of those classes instead…heck, if you could skip it, i’m sure NO ONE would take it and would take like astro or geology or something…

as far as taking it later tho…i know you can do this. i have a premed friend who didnt take it this year and instead took bio/o.chem…you probably have to ask the core office tho and be able to provide a good reason why you want to take it later

that being said…there are benefits to taking it with your friends (if only to make fun of the lecturers)

Even potential science majors are required to take it. Along with UW and LitHum, it is meant to be part of the first year core experience. I’d think carefully about advising your S to put it off till later, because everyone else will be taking it first year, talking about it, griping about it, doing problem sets together. In other words, based on my S’s experience, the core is as much about bonding with classmates as about academics. Other intro classes, especially in science, are likely to be large lecture classes with optional recitation sections, while FoS has a small class aspect to it along with the lectures. If your S takes it later, he will be in a required recitation section with all first years.

transfers: you should know that you can get out of UW–it just requires some writing samples.

interesting, i had no idea.
