So, I plan to major in physics with a Sc.B degree, but I’m thinking about skipping the first year courses (Ph 7, 8), and starting directly with Ph 47, 50, (maybe even higher?) or someplace around there. It’s not clear from the website if I am allowed to do that, tho.
Any thoughts, would doing so be wise? Or is there any place I could find a syllabus for the courses? BOCA or the Critical Review Online aren’t really that helpful…

Just thought about asking here for some advice, before emailing an advisor or smth

Physics 7 is known as one of the most challenging courses at Brown. The chance that you have the background to skip this course is slim to none, unless you’ve been taking college level vector calculus based physics for quite sometime. I’m sure that if you could prove to the department that you’ve already learned what is to be taught in those two years you’ll be able to skip, but they are considered base knowledge kind of courses that everyone in the concentration needs to take to normalize your background.

Generally you cannot skip courses that are in your concentration except for some AP credit issues, and always (as far as I know) you’ll have to replace those courses with other classes in the concentration (i.e. you won’t take less physics by not taking those courses).

Like I said though, the chance that you don’t need ot take these classes is very low, as most people who take it feel unprepared even, rather than that they’re going through the motions. Phys 8 is much easier, from my understanding, but still no walk in the park.

Also, with Banner, though it won’t occur for another year, it’s potentially harder to get pre-registered for classes for which you don’t have the pre-reqs for. Addtionally, I don’t believe pre-frosh are registering for classes other than first year seminars & CAPs till they get to Brown for orientation?

Pre-frosh used to pre-register but it was never finalized until they had signatures from their advisor. I wouldn’t be surprised if that will be eliminated now, as it was redundant before and too much of a headache now with Banner.

modestmelody got it, PH 7 and 8 are nothing like AP Physics or anything most high schoolers do (from what I’ve heard, my roommate last year took them) It looked really hard to. He had no trouble with orgo, but he spent hours upon hours on PH 7.
