While in Mexico, I have begun to use Skype as a very inexpensive and reliable method of calling friends/relatives/businesses in other places. I like it, whether calling to someone who has Skype on his computer or whether calling a land line via Skype…

However, I don’t know how to interact with phone systems or menus which request you to key in a digit, when using Skype. If a Voice Menu at an airline or company tells you to, say, “Press 1” or “Press extension 4560 for Technical Support,” how do you do that when you are at a computer keyboard with a microphone/headset?

Jmmom, you just type the number keys on your computer keyboard. For “pound”, just use shift + 3, etc.

You can also just type the zero, if you want to zero completely out of a phone system menu and go straight to an operator.

I use Skype for over 80% of my calls - cell for the other 20%; we still have a traditional landline at the house I own, but we haven’t actually used it to place calls in over a year - Skype is $15 for unlimited calling throughout the U.S. and Canada for an entire year, and international calls are very inexpensive.

The forums on the Skype website are an excellent resource for just about any user question you can think of.

Jmmom, sometimes - if the internet connectivity is a bit iffy - you can type in the numbers correctly, but the phone system on the other end doesn’t “hear” the numbers, so, the recording continues as if you haven’t typed anything. If that happens, just backspace the numbers out of the field, and re-enter. If it still doesn’t work, disconnect the call and redial, or, see if the phone system will receive “0” for an operator.

That happens to me sometimes, and it seems to be related to weak internet connectivity.

latetoschool, are you familiar with Skype rates between the US and western Europe? I’m going to be studying in Scotland all of next year and Skype looks like an excellent option.

cavalier - if your friends/family download Skype onto their computer, it is totally free. Kind of like using AIM only higher quality VOIP. If not, you can find the rates very easily on Skype’s website.

cavalier - skype is definitely the way to go. My husband’s company uses it for all their communications (a lot of international phone traffic) and most of their business associates also have skype. Since skype to skype is free and skype to phone or cell rates are reasonable for most parts of the world, it’s a great way to save.

(Our d also has skype on her computer in Chapel Hill. Between that and unlimited Cingular to Cingular, we pay practically nothing to talk with her…that is, when we can actually get in TOUCH with her…)

Now that I’ve been using Skype for quite a while, I thought I knew what I was doing. But…

Lately, when my laptop is on and head phones are plugged in and Skype is open… BUT my laptop is in sleep/stand by mode…

If someone calls me, I don’t hear the ring. My computer doesn’t “wake up” to let me know there is a call incoming. I seem to think it used to wake up for that.

Anyone know if there is a setting I need to change? I can’t seem to find the answer in Skype Help or User Guides. Thanks.
