When I applied via Common App to NYU, there was a problem with my application that I was not aware of until the night before the application was due. When I finally got my NYU ID after a few days of back-and-forth to make sure my final application would be accepted, there were no more In-Person auditions dates in Chicago or in nearby cities (my family was not in the best financial situation and a plane ticket would have been too much). I opted for one of the last two Skype Interview with Digital Audition spots “in Chicago”.

I was told by one of my friends who is currently studying in the musical theatre studio at NYU that the Digital Auditions are viewed less highly than the In-Person ones as she found out from her voice teacher there. I was wondering if this would possibly give me less of a chance of being accepted? Could that possibly be the case?

@Blayce, with all due respect to your NSB MT friend, they have absolutely no idea if that is the case or not. They are not part of the admission committee nor privilege to their deliberations. Nor is likely her private voice teacher if that what she is suggesting. Now if she is referring to Michael McElroy who is a full time staff member of NSB and part of the audit committee, he is very professional and it would be out of character for him to share something like that with his current students.

I would not be at all surprised if they do prefer in-person auditions because the quality of the experience is better for everyone, performer and auditor. But that is not the same thing as viewing the performer less highly. Since they offered it as an option, they have to take it just as seriously and understand the challenges the technology creates. Many schools had to go this route this year because of cancellations and scheduling complications due to the very severe winter weather. You can’t worry about it. I wish you all the best!
