SLC's

Anyone else’s school have them? Do you like yours?

Mine is called the PEACE Academy, which stands for (let’s see if I can remember this):
Personal success through
Empowerment,
Academic achievement,
Conflict resolution and
Ethics in action.

I love it…the teachers are all REALLY nice, I would go to any of them with any of my problems and I will probably ask all the teachers I’ve had for recommendations. And all the students are amazing.

slc = small learning community?

yes  /woooooooo/

I’ve never heard of SLCs, so no, we don’t have one

http://www3.lbusd.k12.ca.us:81/millikan/SmallerLearningComm/Academies/News/briefdescriptions.htm

That’s a basic description of the ones my school offers, they’re awesome. :)

at my school we have a ton
im in SAS= School for Advanced Studies

I think they’ve added more since that site was posted, there’s some where we hear their name and we’re all like “What’s that?”
XD. It’s actually kind of funny.

Small learning communities are groups/houses/leagues/teams that have been divided by the administration in a given school. I guess you have to go to a school that large.

My school has this because of a grant they were given. The main purpose of the grant - I think - is to foment a sense of unity. All of us think the SLC is a bunch of BS because they are treating us like middle schoolers and there is no sense of unity. The government grant should be spend on something else that is actually going to benefit the school.

There’s definitely a sense of unity with us…and there’s a lot of competition between the SLC’s but most of it is friendly.

Especially between PEACE, which I’m in, and QUEST, which is like chickenboi’s SAS. The Quest kids are all upset because PEACE is getting a lot of attention but QUEST has been around longer, so now they’re bitter. XD I’m friends with a lot of QUESTies though (we all have nicknames…QUESTies, PEACErs, so on and so forth), and most of them don’t have a problem.

It’s nice to have a sense that you belong somewhere in a school that’s over 4,000 kids. Because in each SLC each graduating class has only about 150 kids, so it makes you feel like you go to a smaller school…it’s really nice, I love it.

^^ Haha…that explains why we don’t have them. Our ENTIRE graduating class is 150 students. :)

…WOW.

That would be such huge culture shock for me. XD

Yeah…
the year after I entered jr. high, they started something like that for the year below us.

That was for 7th graders.
