slight politics reference in an essay

I know I should stay away from political beliefs in a college essay, but I’m writing one on Debate Team (it’s for the Common App activity essay) in which I want to explain why my courses and other ECs are so science/math-focused, and yet Debate is one of my main ECs. I’d like to basically say that my participation with Debate actually strengthened my interest in science and my support of it due to topics like evolution/creationism, stem cell research, and global warming. Is it ok to say this, or is it too risky?

Note: this is for Cornell.

i think it should be ok. colleges cant reject you based on your personal opinions even if they dont agree. it also shows how dynamic you are

If this is true, my admission prospects are doomed.

The specific topics you mention are not only political, they are social, environmental, and ethical. They seem perfectly suitable to use. These are the kinds of topics that are regularly discussed on college campuses, though they are avoided in high school.
