Slightly concerned I could have done better

I’m set to attend the University of Pittsburgh next fall, and there are many things I like about the school. In particular, I like the school’s excellent reputation in Philosophy and the many options that it provides in that area. However, while I’m mostly content with my decision, part of me thinks that I could have been admitted to somewhere better in terms of overall academic reputation. The average GPA of incoming freshmen at Pitt is 3.9 and their typical SAT scores are in the mid and upper 600’s to 700, or so. This profile matches me very well, as my HS GPA was 3.94 and my SAT’s were 660 CR 650 M and 700 W.

Despite that, does anyone think I would have had a good shot at somewhere higher in the rankings and greater in reputation? My main areas of interest include Philosophy, History, Political Science, and Physics/Astronomy, so better schools that are strong in one or more of those areas would be best if you can think of any that I could have been admitted to.

I’m really only asking this question because the thought of transferring somewhere else after 1 or 2 semesters at Pitt is in the back of my mind. Who knows how I’ll feel a year from now, though?

honestly, yes i do think you could have gotten int oa school more “reputable”

however, it seesm you’re overthinking this, maybe suffering from symptoms similar to that of “buyer’s remorse.” I see it cause i can relate. you made the desicion to commit to this uni, and that isn’t a desicion that one takes lightly. but now that you’ve gotten in, attained it, you start seeing it in a dimmer light. this wears off and reputation is no reflection of how much you’ll enjoy the university or how beneficial it will be to your life.

pitt is a great place and MANY considered “overqualified” students attend this university because of the name and education pitt offers. so you’re deff not alone.

but yea, the simple answer is see how you feel a year from now. you will deff know by then, but my suspicion is you really wont want to transfer as transferring is usually a process one does when they are intensely dissatisfied with their experience somewhere and not over some last minute regret/thought like “what if I could’ve done better”

hope this helped

Err, what schools do you have in mind?

I have a strange fixation with Brown, mostly because I get the impression that it’s a very smart, liberal place. Plus some other things, but those details aren’t super important. I realize my SAT’s are a little low and the chances of getting in there are low for almost anyone, regardless of grades. I think I could have gotten into Lehigh as well, maybe even CMU, but that might not have been smart because the school has a definite technical focus, and that’s not what I’m going for. Possibly Georgetown or Tufts.
