My wife got a text about some brain IQ weekly text service that costs $9.99 per month. I wanted to make sure she wasn’t automatically signed up for this, so I checked our bill and found a different service that we have been paying for. My family plan (4 lines) ATT cellphone bill is 11 pages of gobbled up fine print. On page 5 there is a 10.69 charge next to “Mobile Purchases & Downloads Charges” and a note, (See Page 6 for a list of individual charges) so I go to page 6 and see in fine print: Rington/Wallppr/Alrt, Content Provider is HaverfordConsult. So I got the charges reversed for the past 2 months, cancelled the “subscription” and placed a block on all 4 numbers for any subscriptions of this type.

Extremely annoying, and I only mention it here as a warning and perhaps a suggestion to check your bill carefully to make sure you are not being hit with this crap. Apparently the outside vendors can just sign people up for their “services” without getting explicit permission, and then they fly under the radar for months with auto billing.

I got hit with a $9.99 charge last month and I don’t download anything (I don’t have a smart phone so nothing to download with even.) Took me about 15 minutes of arguing with Verizon (who told me it was a legit charge but couldn’t tell me what exactly it was for, which I found very suspicious) to get the charge removed.

Verizon lets you block all that stuff through their web portal.

After we got dinged a few times for pressing the wrong button on mine phone, downloading 10 bytes of data, and getting charged $2.00 (DW is the only one with a smartphone), I went in and blocked pretty much everything.

I have gone line by line over our cell phone bill for the 24 years we have had it, but more so once the kids were added to the family plan. I remember my AT&T sales rep at our local retail store laughing at me each month as I came in with the bill every month. It might only be an 87 cent errant charge, but I wasn’t paying it. I always loved when we would get charged for a long distant call back in the day when we were on the Nationwide plan, or whatever it was called. Why does one get charged for a LD call when all calls made to a US number should have been free? This would go on monthly for a couple of years. That $2 call here and $3 call there would have added up over time if I hadn’t noticed.
