Slingbox or DVD recorder?

My husband needs to be away from home a good bit and really likes to follow a few shows as well as Formula 1 racing. We have Tivo and a cable company DVR which usually is fine for the television shows, but isn’t the best for the racing.

For those that do not follow F1,(and I can not imagine there are many here,) when a race is run is happens over a 3 day period. He must watch day one and two before the real race on day three. When I say he follows F1 I mean he lives and breaths F1!! He will not even turn on ESPN or read a sports section of the paper for fear of seeing the outcome before he has watched that days race.

As a treat to himself, we are looking into something to record the race so that he can watch while on call. We thought about Slingbox once before as you can watch on your computer from anywhere. With slingbox it is my understanding that it can be installed on more than one computer. The advantage with that is the whole family could install it on their computer allowing more use of it. If someone accesses Slingbox from their computer, the TV Slingbox is connected to can not be in use; not a problem as we would connect it to a TV not in the family room.

Another option would be a DVD recorder. The disadvantage would be that my husband would have to get home to pick up the DVD (or have his lovely wife deliver it to him!!) He has access to a DVD player in the call room or can watch on his computer.

Any idea which has better recording images? I am thinking a DVD recorder would be more cost efficient as we do not own a VCR that records anymore as we have Tivo and a DVR. It might be nice to record a movie or show on a DVD to have for when we travel. I also don’t know with some of our computers if we have the room to install Slingbox. or if the processors are fast enough.

I can not believe not one person here has a Slingbox or DVD recorder!

Bumping this thread just in case.

My DS requested a slingbox for xmas a year ago so that he could watch tv while in his
dorm room. He and my spouse tried for a few months to get all the gear, software, to make it work. We didn’t have a cable box on the tv which was near the computer so we
got an extra cable box (new $10 monthly charge). We were never able to make it work. By the time we decided to abandon the effort, it was too late to return the slingbox.
We never figured out what the problem was.

We have the slingbox and DH loves it but he is the only one using it right now. I’ll ask him about the particulars…

I have had a Slingbox for over a year. And a SlingCatcher, too. The Slingbox slings Tivo to my computer. Sets up easily, and there’s NO service charge. Can also sling Tivo to my Treo Centro so I can watch teeny tiny Tivo on my phone!

Then we got the SlingCatcher so we can sling Tivo to our kitchen TV where there’s no cable or Tivo hooked up. That works great, too.

Very inspiring- I will have to give it another shot!
