I’m moving into an off-campus apartment in August. My friend/roommate is bringing a thrift store couch and a recliner. I’m bringing a big corduroy rocking chair from the 90s. All of these pieces are mismatched and varying degrees of ugly. I’m looking into slipcovers, at least for the sofa since that seems to be the biggest offender. I’m waiting on my roommate to send measurements of each item.
Do any of you wise parents of CC have slipcover recommendations? I’ve been looking at some online at Target and the reviews seem quite mixed.
We got a maytex stretch slipcover off Amazon (I think it was the “pixel” model) for D’s ugly couch. As far as I know its holding up well. After having a twill cover on our own couch, I highly recommend the stretchy ones. She doesn’t have to constantly adjust the cover back into place every time someone sits on it.
(I posted this discussion from my smartphone and realized it’s not in the Parent Cafe where it was meant to be- feel free to move it to the appropriate location!!)
I found good choices for an ugly inherited sofa a couple of years ago… the company is called SureFit…we get a catalog in the mail but I’m sure they have a website as well.
I’ve used the stretchy Surefit slipcovers on a couple of older sofas. They’re easy to put on and have held up well. You can buy them at Target, I think, but the selection is much better online. Check Amazon, too. http://www.surefit.net/category/?c=TPSELR&p=1&rank=-units_sold&sale=0
My folks have very ugly furniture that they’ve been reluctant to replace (they think they’ll be moving to a smaller place so no need). We covered them by putting a nice comforter over the couch and then they put a beach towel over that. It’s not perfect but MUCH better than it was.
I looked into quality stretch slipcovers and found them to be quite pricey. You will have to decide if its really worth it. You may just get used to the mismatched furniture.
I hate to raise it, but I hope your friend/roommate has been living with that thrrft store couch for a while and can vouch that it doesn’t harbor bedbugs. Given the epidemic of bedbugs in recent years, I would never take in secondhand upholstered furniture unless I was very comfortable it was bug-free.
D1 ordered a slipcover and it was really too large for the sofa, plus not a good fit for the style of the arms. You really need a pic of the sofa to match it to the shapes/sizes of the arms, back, any cushions, etc.
But. There are little pins for tailoring this. The metal part is curly-cue, so you twist it in and it should hold, the top looks a bit like a small plastic button.
Roommate informed me that she already has a couch slipcover, which is news to me. I don’t think I’ll bother trying to find a suitable slipcover for the 90s chair, but maybe the recliner if it’s more unsightly in person than in pictures. Otherwise I will probably take the throw+pillow suggestion.
Believe me, @MommaJ, the thought has crossed my mind. Roommate’s mom is really into thrifting/furniture restoration so I’m hoping that these items are safe. Roommate will likely be moving in a few days before me or my stuff is there, so if there are any issues I’d imagine she’d notice them within those few days.
There was nothing in the lease about it. The building we’re living in is near two college campuses and thus the vast majority of tenants are students. I’d say there are more used couches than new ones.
I’ve been thrifting at the Salvation Army lately and seen quite a lot of surprisingly nice upholstered furniture. It would appear that all of it has been steam cleaned and bug free. Seems as if that is their standard procedure nowadays.
