Can anyone offer suggestions for what type of slippers are most commonly worn by guys in dorms (not shower shoes) and what is a favorite choice for a mattress topper; ie, 2" or 3" memory foam, feather bed, egg crate? I am looking for a washable, detachable one, that rests on top of the mattress, under the fitted mattress pad.

The foam things are are not washable. We bought the cheapest one at Bed Bath and Beyond and threw it away at the end of every school year. About $12 a year. The down alternative ones will run you well over the $48…but they can be washed in an OVERSIZE washer. I can tell you up front…your college student is unlikely to EVER wash it, and it will be bulky to schlep home for you to take to a laundromat.

Re: slippers…I asked my son…he says no one wore slippers. He had Adidas slip on things…but really they were also his “shower shoes”. If your son wears slippers at home, just have him take those with him to college.

I would say no to the slippers–no one wore them–we got 2" foam toppers from Overstock.com for our older 2 and put a mattress pad over that. Didn’t need to wash the foam topper at all. Our oldest actually took it off his bed because the school had new mattresses and he said they were very comfortable without the topper.

I second the 3" memory foam topper from either Costco or Bed Bath and Beyond, (using their 20% off coupon). My son washed his mattress pad only once at the end of each year,(yuk). He never wore slippers except for shower slip on.

Thanks everyone! OK, so it’s no to slippers…yes to slip-ons that can be worn in shower or with socks (ie, the Adidas kind, I guess) and a 3" memory foam topper from Costco. I really appreciate the help!!

I think I’m one of the few people out there, but I hate memory foam. I find it makes me way too hot when I try to sleep, and I always wake up with my back soaked in the middle of the night. I prefer the foam that is actually an egg-crate style (often sold as “convoluted foam” toppers). I think Amazon sells them for a pretty reasonable price.

Check first to make sure your college allows memory foam. Some do not due to fire risks. Also, remember to buy extra thick sheets if you buy a 3 inch mattress topper.

After sleeping on some truly horrible beds at camp, my kids had no complaints about the mattresses at college. If you aren’t able to adapt to less than perfect conditions at age 18, woe unto you. Hate to pull a “back in my day”, but when I went to college toppers didn’t exist and I don’t recall anyone making a big deal about the mattress.
