SLO Financial Aid

I’m in-state. lol
and i received 5550$ from the pell grant
also i received 1550$ from cal grant ( i qualified, but wasnt rewarded cal grant A)
@kaicosmoz did you receive cal grant A??
mostly everyone i know that has an efc=0 has to pay 10000 in loans =[

Social:
goggle “Stafford Loan” - their site has all the loan info.

Do the Cal States and UC’s give mostly loans as student aid? All I got from Cal poly was a bunch of student and parent loans. Can I expect the same from UC’s? I got better financial aid from a good private university that will make my costs about the same.

Anne2014, the answers to your questions are ‘yes’ based on my experience last year and I also came to the same conclusion that the cost of a private university would be about the same once all the readily available scholarships - the Univ. of Colorado offered $5K up front - were factored in. Actually, they were less expensive if you figured in the extra year it usually takes to get through Cal Poly engineering. But that was '09. Perhaps things have tightened up in the private sector as well.

Question : What’s a Cal Grant?

I had an efc of 90 bucks and I got offered the pell grant, cal grant A, and cal grant B all for a total of just under 13,000. They then offered me a a 1,000 dollar scholarship, and 3,000 in work-study. So my loans are only 4500. Looks like after working this summer I won’t have to take out any loans to go to school =). Thats very weird that you didn’t get the cal grant A, you should call them

I thought Cal grants were guaranteed if you had at least a 3.0 gpa and met the income requirement.

Family EFC of 36K, and yet I was offered 21K in loans. ._. Problem being: my parents still can’t afford CP, and don’t want me to take out any loans for undergrad.

I knew I wouldn’t be getting any grants with my efc, but do they normally hand out this much in loans? How are you eligible for work study?

Heyy I got a financial aid package today.
I got like, 7776 in grants, 3000 in work study, and like 10800 in loans.
It’s made up of grants, work/study, and loans.
Mine also says 2011.
About the work study, I’m not sure really what it is, and I read about it on Cal Poly’s website.
Would it be working in my major, or any job on campus? Or what…
Thanks!

Oh and my EFC was around $3200.

^mochaloca, or EFC is in the same ballpark. I knew we would not be offered any Pell or Cal Grants or any other type of Fin Aid for that matter.

Well other than what CP and all the other schools seem to do is attempt to promote student and parent loans as Fin Aid. I am sorry, but I just don’t see this as aid. Not sure how giving me an opportunity to apply for a loan constitues aid.

Oh well in our case no surprise and still much cheaper than the UCs for us.

I agree norcalpadre. The loan offers are not truly financial aid, but a way to get loans. I think it is easier than securing a loan on our own and the rates are special for students. I need to look into what the loans are like and if it is a smart way to go.

True. It will all end up coming out of our pockets one way or another. :frowning: Our EFC is $15,000+. Our goal is to *not *have our daughter take out loans if at all possible…or at least large ones that she’ll be paying off for years. If she has to take out a smaller loan down the line, that might work. Or in grad school. So, we’ll see how it goes. CP and other CSUs are still less than many other schools she applied to. But, still not pocket change, by *any *means.
