Sloan: does an MS in mech. eng. help?

I’m getting a BA in Math and Physics, and a BE in mechanical engineering. I have the option to continue for the MS in mech. eng., but I’m not sure if I want to continue in the engineering field. I am considering business school, and I would be very interested to have answers to the following questions.

Would it be more beneficial to continue my engineering education and get an MS or to start working straight out of school if my goal is to get into Sloan’s MBA program?

What would my chances be of getting in directly after school, for both the BA/BE and the BA/BE/MS combinations? Would you recommend this?

Your chances of getting into any top B-school, including Sloan, are very slim if you have no work experience. I’ve seen some brilliant people who started as freshmen at MIT and stayed to earned their PhD’s, and then afterwards applied to the Sloan MBA program. They were rebuffed. Why? No real-world work experience.

Any advice on whether I should go for the MS or not if I’m interested in business school?

Like I said, you will still need your work experience. Will having an MS help? Sure. But it’s not going to be a substitute for work experience.
