So I have a cumulative gpa of 1.66 in my junior year of high school right now (I know it’s quite awful…Well pass awful HORRENDOUS) but I have been dealing with a personal family matter that called for most of my attention and now I feel like I’ve failed everyone,… mostly myself… I’m trying so hard to ride this through but it is so stressful… What chances do I even have to get into college?
Have you always struggled academically or just in high school?
I did poorly in high school. I was able to get a degree. Start at s community college one class at a time.
OK, first of all: Know that not all kids hit their stride at the same age in spite of what you read on this site. Lots and lots and lots of kids struggle-- academically, socially, emotionally-- in high school, and hit their stride after high school has ended. So there’s no need to feel badly about yourself or to think of giving up.
First things first: is the family matter resolved, or have you found a way to deal with it? It sounds as though it’s cost you a lot of time and attention. If it’s still looming-- say a seriously ill parent or something-- then you might consider a gap year or so until it no longer has such a huge effect on your life.
Once that’s taken care of: your grades may preclude your immediate admission to a 4 year school. But take a look at community colleges. I was surprised to learn a few months ago that there are some CCs with dorms. (If you happen to be in NY, take a look at Herkimer, Adirondack, Tompkins-Cortland, Sullivan-- there may be others.) Going to a CC will allow you to get your grades together while you earn your Associates Degree for those first 2 years of college. You can then transfer to a 4 year college with stronger credentials than you currently possess…
You have not failed anyone. You’re not in jail, you haven’t hurt anyone, you’ve simply been caught up in something that your peers aren’t dealing with. It’s not fair, but that’s life sometimes.
So pick up the pieces and find the right school.
Don’t give up!
If you can identify what the problem has been, you can try to address that.
Is your family situation under control? Do you need help with your school work? What do you need to dig yourself out? Junior year is still new, and the sooner you take action, the better off you’ll be.
Do you have a GC or teacher who can give you advice and support?
You may have changed your path, but that doesn’t mean it can’t go great places. Overcoming a setback is an important life skill.
@bjkmom Yes I do have a GC and I actually am on fall break I’ve contacted my teachers and they are giving me a second chance to finish my assignments due to my family circumstances… and I also qualify for RSA. I’ve come up with the plan to go to community college to get my gpa up then transfer. I’m right now studying for the PSAT that I have to take October 24.
This has been a huge setback in where I want to be in life
