SLP graduate comps

I am currently a second year speech-language pathology graduate student. The program that I am enrolled in, is a brand new program that is just now trying to figure out how they are going to be giving comps. As of right now, the comps will cover a variety of different subjects and be made up of multiple choice questions in order to help us prepare for the praxis exam. They also want to make the passing criteria 85%. With that being said, I wanted to ask other SLP/ SLP graduates how their schools comps were laid out. Our staff have said that if you fail the comps many programs will not let you re-take them until a year later and their passing criteria is fairly high. This is all based on research they have done with other SLP programs. My classmates have also researched this and found the opposite. I just wanted to hear what you all had to say concerning this matter. Thanks in advance for the information! If you could please write your school name as well that would be great!

Schools look really bad when they lose students. I don’t think your program would want to lose people who did not pass. Most programs allow you to retake them-sometimes only the portion you missed -if there are different sections. If not, then the entire thing. Often they list a number of fails allowable-after which they will throw you out but will usually re-accept u but you will have to petition to get in. A drag for those who have to do that. Accreditation agencies really frown on lost students. Programs often have to justify each one. So they are almost as keen to avoid your failure as you are.

I am a speech pathologist. You need to verify your school policy with YOUR school. Schools differ on how, they administer and score their comps.

No way anyone here can tell you what the policy is at your school.

And it doesn’t matter at all what the policy is at other schools. For you…all that matters is the policy at YOUR school.

P.S. Where I went to grad school, one had to have a B average to get ones masters degree. As I recall, you couldn’t get below a B in any class. So…an 85 average seems right as a cut off to me.
